150mg aspirin in pregnancy for psoriasis??

Hi!
I was just wondering if anyone had been asked to take aspirin in pregnancy from 12 weeks due to having psoriasis? I see it for other things like preclamsia and blood clot/pressure etc but I can't find anything for psoriasis on the Internet. I know it is an autoimmune disease but I've never heard of this before. Just 150mg seems higher than it used to be and I'm nervous!
Thanks
Jenna

150mg is the standard dose of aspirin during pregnancy if you have any risk factors nowadays. I have psoriasis (mild though) as well, and took aspirin in both my pregnancies, but due to other risk factors. Do you have any other risk factors? Age, weight, previous history?

Thanks for your reply. The only other thing is that it is my first pregnancy. My dad did have some history of a blood clot and heart attack but I myself only have the psoriasis (only scalp). I guess I was just a bit worried as I had searched and nothing comes up regarding psoriasis and taking aspirin. I'm also quite small, so just worried about the dosage but guess it is still OK!

I'm 32 and BMI of 23, so again nothing too worrisome there either.

Family history of blood clots might be a factor, but it is more likely it's down to psoriasis being an auto immune disease. It never came up for me as risk factor probably because I had enough risk factors already. 150mg really is a very low dose. It's half a regular tablet once a day. And aspirin is safe in pregnancy. Don't worry about it. Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy. ❤

Thanks so much! ❤ I think as it took us a while to get here, I'm just worrying about everything! Thanks for putting my mind at ease. Guess I will just have to get on with it 😊. Take care.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (acupuncture and herbs specifically) can work wonders for psoriasis and other autoimmune diseases. This is a natural method and so is safe in pregnancy but it's important to see a well trained and experienced practitioner.

@Jennabarber Me! I have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
My consultant advised to take it from 12 weeks to help the blood flow from the placenta and because I have a higher risk of pre-eclampsia (unsure if this is from the arthritis or that it’s an IVF pregnancy).
I’ve had growth scans throughout my pregnancy and the blood flow has been spot on.

My consultant said that they use aspirin for lots of things in pregnancy and it’s very safe.

good luck :)

Thank you! I've been going to a fertility acupuncturist for about 7 months now and she is amazing. I go for my anxiety too. I can't say it has done much for my psoriasis but the anxiety it does keep at bay. I think she has given me more information than the midwives and doctors put together! Well worth it.

@Lifeisstressful thank you so much for coming back to me. I feel so much better now you've said that. I just have it on my scalp and started getting a few little bits on my chest since being pregnant. I've been taking the aspirin now but I'm 15 weeks and still feel nervous. Really glad yours is going well and the blood flow is good! When do they check the blood flow? I'm just being left to it until after 21 odd weeks, so feel a bit uneasy. Especially since I feel totally normal besides a small bump!

@Jennabarber I didn’t have a Doppler scan until 22 weeks.
The outcome of that scan determines whether I would be scanned at 28 or 32 weeks. We then had 32,36 and I’m booked in for 39 weeks.

I was also concerned at the start but figured my consultant knows what she’s doing x

haggan · 08/07/2022 09:42

I wasn't advised to, no.

My consultant advised to take it from 12 weeks to help the blood flow from the placenta

My final pregnancy notching was picked up at 20 weeks so I wonder if aspirin could have helped?

I ended up with scans every 2 weeks, gestational diabetes and induced at 38 weeks due to the pre eclampsia symptoms starting.

I have scalp psoriasis and little bits here and there. What is the reason given for taking it? It wasn’t mentioned to me and I found psoriasis cleared up a lot anyway during pregnancy, presumably due to the surpression of the immune system.

ItchyBit · 08/07/2022 09:54

I had higher blood pressure towards the end of first pregnancy (didn’t get to pre-eclampsia), no diabetes. No issues with second pregnancy.

Jennabarber · 08/07/2022 13:24

@ItchyBit they said as it is an autoimmune disease you have a higher risk of getting high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia. I had never heard of this before from having psoriasis but I guess why would I?
Mine hasn't cleared up unfortunately 😔. Actually seems worse! So, maybe taking the aspirin is a good thing just in case!
There must be some reason for it as when I did the 'tick box' for what I had medically, the computer prompts the midwife to advise the aspirin as she had ticked psoriasis.

@haggan oh bless you! Sounds like you had a bit of a tough time towards the end.
I know it is probably best to follow what they say but its just that they chuck all this stuff at you with no information and send you on your merry way.
Just wanted to see if anyone else had this but still seems to be some are and some aren't kind of thing. Not sure if it is where I live and they do things differently or not but I live in Norwich.
I will carry on taking it but still scares me a bit!

@Lifeisstressful I guess I will just have to wait and see. Glad everything is good for you and I bet it is getting exciting now!

That is true. I think because it is my first and I suffer with anxiety, I just overthink things! X

@Jennabarber Very exciting (and slightly nervous now!!) only a week and a half to go.

I completely get the nerves and anxiousness, I’ve found it really hard during pregnancy with the worry.

I can’t say whether it is the aspirin or just coincidence but all blood flow and BP has been good so far so I’m happy to take it x

PinkButtercups · 08/07/2022 14:08

Also been put on 150mg of Aspirin to take nightly.

I'm having twins so after my 12 week scan I saw the twin midwife and she said it's to help the blood flow around the placentas as I have DCDA twins. 14+6 at the moment but have been taking them since 12 weeks. Also to reduce the risk of PE which is a higher change when pregnant with multiples anyway.

OneBigToDoList · 08/07/2022 15:00

Hi @Jennabarber I’ve also been prescribed it as I have rheumatoid arthritis and this is my first baby. I felt exactly the same, nervous to take it and also a bit confused why it was needed. I had the blow flow scan and all was OK. I have questioned it a few times with the consultant and she’s happy for me to go down to 75mg a day now, so maybe ask if you’re worried? I am already taking medication for my arthritis and low iron so it was the thought of adding more medication to the list that bothered me. My condition has also got worse, I was hoping for a lull in pregnancy, but oh well! Best of luck xx

ItchyBit · 08/07/2022 17:15

That must be newer advice (my DCs are 16 and 13 now). My blood pressure increased at around 38 weeks and I was induced at 40 weeks with DC1 but no issue with DC2 (and no treatment for anything) - arrived at hospital at 7.30 am, born at 11.30 and we all headed home at 15.30, in time to collect DC1 from nursery (most obliging DC2 has ever been….)
