Testing for Downs Syndrome, who is the fab consultant everyone talks about?

A good friend has been given a high chance of having a LO with Downs Syndrome. I know I read a thread recently where lots of you have been to a Fab consultant in London.

I have had a look for it but I am getting thread blindness now

Can anyone remind me who he is and where he works so I can email his details to her?

She has had another test (scan I think) today and I am waiting to hear from her and if things are looking worrying I would like to be able to offer her some useful advice. She knows I MN so may suss me out if she reads this but if so >

I saw him (for private nuchal scan) at Fetal Medicine Centre, Harley Street. He's really eccentric but the leading expert in the field.

angel1976 · 15/01/2008 20:55

He heads the Harris Birthright Unit at King's College and also the Fetal Medicine Centre in Harley St. I think King's does mostly NHS while FMC is private (but their profits goes to a foundation training sonographers). I had a high risk NT scan and was told that he works at FMC on Wednesday doing CVS/amnios. We didn't see him as we couldn't wait that long but I did end up getting CVS at Harris and can't praise the consultants there highly enough! When I went to FMC for my wellbeing scan lately, I saw the doctor who performed my CVS there so I suspect you do get certain consultants doing both places. You can always call them and ask which day he works.

Coolmama · 15/01/2008 21:02

He is only at FMC on Wednesdays - and the appointments always run very late, as in 2 to 3 hrs late, so they ask you to check in at your appointment time and then give you a return time - the last time, I had a 3 hr wait!!! - so take a book, snacks etc. He is a little eccentric (to put it mildly) so don't be put off by his somewhat bizarre way of saying things - (he called me a mad old woman in the nicest possible way, of course!)

poppy34 · 15/01/2008 22:02

all the FMC docs are very good - they're all part of nikolaides school so even if you can't get him you get a top level of care

FMC is fab went there for my second dc they are all very professional and it is very reasonable compared to other private scanning places

callmeovercautious · 15/01/2008 23:34

Thanks everyone. I will pass on the info. She is lucky enough to be able to afford Private care if needs be and it sounds like this Man is the one to go for for the clearest answers. Hopefully he can give her the answer she is looking for.

The fetal medicine centre without any doubt.
Had my scan there for DS1

Am in singapore now and the top dog in fetal diagnosis here was also one of Prof Nikolaides' student and the singapore women's hospital has the seal of approval of the fetal medicine foundation.
Surely if their reputation travelled all the way to a place as strict as Singapore regarding scientific standards, it must mean something!

All the consultants in Harley street are well trained and can be trusted.

LOVEMYMUM · 16/01/2008 07:51

The prices are fairly reasonable - DH & i paid £200 for a 21 week scan (no complications). Obviously prices vary but we thought it was well worth the money to have someone of his experience and knowledge check our baby out.

Very nice man with (we found) a good sense of humour.

(I think Prof N's name should be at the top of Mumsnet screens cos he is mentioned so much .)

callmeovercautious · 16/01/2008 21:16

Perhaps we should get commission if we recommend a friend Thanks so much. I know she will really appreciate the recommendations. I am seeing her later this week so I will pass the details on.

yep prof Nikolaides is indeed a god!!! (an eccentric god). I had 20 week scan at harris birthright and he waltzed in halfway through. poor student sonographer actually was shaking. she said I'm so nervous with you here. He just grinned and helped her out. Then removed scanner thing from her said lets have a go!! whizzed away at speed of light hmm hmm mm hmm (humming away) all looks brilliant to me. Did you want to know sex or not? we said yes. so he took scanner up to baby's head and said look small brain its a girl!!! took one look at my face and showed me the real reason she was a she!!! And still had to comment look at her legs wide open!!! He was grinning all the way through, gave my hand a squeeze wished me luck and ambled off again! He was so funny.

LOVEMYMUM · 17/01/2008 09:57

Hi chris - v. similar to our experience. (I called DH "Father of the Bride" all the way home!)

margoandjerry · 17/01/2008 10:00

And I believe he invented the whole nuchal fold testing thing too. That's what they told me in Switzerland anyway (where I had my pg). He really is world-famous.

chrissnow · 17/01/2008 10:03

yes i think he did too. Whenever dh tells anyone about it he always says "when people say they wrote the book on it . . . well this guy really did!!!"
I still get this feeling of 'pride' from having him scan our baby!! weird huh?

LOVEMYMUM · 17/01/2008 10:05

I also have a feeling of pride that we saw him. Not strange at all - we've seen one of the world authorities on baby scanning and it's the responsible thing to do.

chrissnow · 17/01/2008 10:10

Oh good. glad i'm not weird!

Did you send him a pic of baby when it was born? Apparently his office wall is covered. He never throws any away!! (eccentric, brilliant and sweet!!)

LOVEMYMUM · 17/01/2008 10:17

LO due end Feb. He may not remember us as we were only seen once for a scan - luckily everything is normal. Hasn't occured to me to send him a photo but will send back the information he wanted.

DH is a Dr and he greeted DH with "Hello colleague"

chrissnow · 17/01/2008 10:20

yeah i sent back the questionnaire with photo and thank you card. I don't think he cares if he remembers someone per se. From what a nurse said to me he genuinly loves babies (which i guess is why he does what he does!!)

FeeBee71 · 22/01/2008 14:44

This is my first post - and I'm a first time mum-to-be too!! Am 11+3, excited, nervous and all the rest. On my booking appt with the midwife, I elected to have the birth at Medway Hospital (Chatham, Kent) which is working in conjunction with King's College Hospital. Prof Nikolaides resides there too... Am relieved to hear such good things about him as I'm pretty nervous as I have my NT scan next week!

Wish me luck!!
