No chicken pox immunity and small kids

Has anyone been in this situation before?

I’ve not had chicken pox before and in my first pregnancy I was tested for antibodies and told I had them and not to worry too much about being exposed. Im now on my third pregnancy and mentioned to the MW that chicken pox is going around my kids school. She decided to test to be on the safe side an apparently I don’t have antibodies and need to be very careful not to catch it!

Neither of my children have had it yet and I’m
really worried about what to do if they do catch it.

I asked MW what to do and she gave some terrible advice! Told me not to worry as I’m after 12 weeks but I just read the ROCG guidelines and it’s actually worse in the last 12 weeks and worst in the last 4!

Can you get your kids vaccinated? TBH I would anyway as I find it slightly ridiculous that kids are expected to get an illness which is unpleasant(and sometimes dangerous), when it's so easy to avoid.

It wouldn’t be my choice to but I think I’ll have to. Although, it’s two vaccines six weeks apart so quite some time before they would be immune.

Cant figure out how I was immune a few years ago and not now. I’d have had myself and them vaccinated early on to avoid all this stress!

If your children do happen to catch it whilst you are pregnant then you can have varicella immunoglobulin which will help. If after 20 weeks they can give you antivirals. You’ll be looked after if you are exposed to it!

I haven’t had chicken pox and am currently 26 weeks with DC2. I have had the vaccine though but it’s still a worry if DD ever caught it. After the birth just get yourself vaccinated against it :)

@ChloeHel yeah I definitely will get vaccinated once the baby is here (and absolutely would of after my first one if I’d known).

They get quite a lot of protection from just one jab.

In between my son's two jabs it did the rounds at his nursery. He was one of only 4 who didn't catch it.

@Twizbe thanks that’s good to know.

Just had a look and it’s 9 out of 10 children will have a immunity after one does. Excellent

Chicken pox is absolutely rife at the minute!!

lilymty · 26/06/2022 20:02

I would ask advice before getting your children jabbed as I was told my dd couldnt be around anyone pregnant who hadn't had chicken pox as its a live vaccine. Can't say that is 100% true but always worth an ask

HousePlantNeglect · 26/06/2022 20:22

@Mammyloveswine isn’t it!? I honestly can’t believe mine haven’t had it yet (and that I was pretty relaxed about it thinking I was immune!)

It's crazy! My youngest had it the other week and eldest has just broken out tonight.., im a teacher and it's literally swept through my school!

@lilymty thanks for the heads up. I asked the GP and this is correct. So vaccine not an option.
