Experiences with cyclizine later into the first trimester?

Hi everyone,

I'm roughly 7w5d pregnant at the moment (could be less, not entirely sure as irregular periods) and have been prescribed cyclizine to combat the 24/7 debilitating nausea I've been experiencing. I haven't been sick, but the nausea has been constant and unbearable from 6 weeks onwards. I've been mostly bedridden and hubby has taken on vast majority of housework, dog care etc.

Been using cyclizine for 3 days now and honestly it's saved my sanity. I don't feel completely better but as long as I take it 3 times a day, I'm able to get on with my life without constantly having to eat peppermints and lie down to avoid the extreme nausea.

I do worry though that I haven't nearly reached the peak of symptoms, being just shy of 8 weeks along. I'm expecting the peak to be 9 or 10 weeks before the placenta takes over, so I'm wondering:

For those of you that took cyclizine for nausea (and it WORKED) - did the positive effects continue as the weeks progressed? Or did it stop working when your symptoms got more severe in later weeks? Did you have to switch to another medication during the peak to get you through?

I'm a worrier, to be honest. I have emetophobia so the need to be prepared so I don't vomit is quite high on my pregnancy priorities 😅

Cyclizine was great for me in earlier 1st trimester but around weeks 9-10 I started vomiting again and needed to add metoclopramide and prochlorperazine to the anti-emetic cocktail. Everybody is different though and you might find that cyclizine is enough.

I had hyperemesis so a different kettle of fish altogether but generally speaking I think cyclizine works better as it builds up in your system so hopefully you'll still get relief from it. It kept me out of hospital at least.

There might be more knowledge about this on the hyperemersis thread but I found that cytlezine worked throughout my last pregnancy and is working ok at 13 weeks. My main problem is swallowing the tablets and keeping them down.

Do you take an ant acid with it?

Runningnewbie · 25/06/2022 22:45

Yes I had it all the way through my last 3 pregnancies, I wouldn’t have coped without it

Nutrinerd · 25/06/2022 23:17

Still on it, started at 6 weeks now nearly 16. Have had to add in other meds, but if I miss the cyclizine I notice it!

I started it at 6 weeks. Needed the maximum dose, but it kept everything under control for me (hospitalised once for IV fluids) until I could stop it at 22 weeks.

I took it from around 14 weeks to around 21, 2 tablets a day. It didn't get less effective but I did feel like it plateaued after a while. At 20 weeks I wasn't feeling perfect but could definitely manage so dropped half a tablet a week, taking 4 weeks in total to come off it

Thanks for sharing your experiences all - I'm 8+1 now and I can tell it's working still, but it feels like I might need to add something else into the mix!

I find myself clock-watching for my next dose because the nausea surfaces again with a vengeance about 4 hours after each dose, and I still have to eat constantly because hunger seems to override the medication altogether.

I had no idea you could add other medications too so thanks @Flibbyjibby + @Nutrinerd

I'll be ringing my GP and getting her opinion tomorrow, I feel like my symptoms definitely haven't peaked yet so might need more help.
