Covid in third trimester

Hi, tested positive for covid for the first time ever yesterday. 29 weeks along.

Its quite scary when you google covid in third trimester and poorer pregnancy outcomes. Is anyone else in the same boat and how are you doing? I called my midwife team to let them know I'd tested positive yesterday but never heard anything back, so not sure if there is anything in particular I need to be watching out for?

The biggest worry is your temperature and your breathing, however Google will show you all the bad stories, there are also lots of women who have had it and been okay and baby has been okay!
Take Paracetamol for any temperature, rest up and if feel tight chested at all call GP or 111, also stay well hydrated!

I had it at 14 weeks and for me the temperature and cough was the worst and I was bed bound for 2 days, otherwise all was fine and I'm now 29 weeks and baby doing great :)

I've just tested positive today as well at 35 weeks. My midwife told me to call triage to arrange collection of an oxygen monitor. When I called them, they also checked my risk score and are prescribing me blood thinner injections. So I'd recommend giving triage a call.

Hope you're doing okay, and the symptoms aren't too bad. My partner tested positive last Sunday and we did our best to keep distance, but didn't manage it :-(

Good luck.

AntiHop · 25/06/2022 13:42

Have you been vaccinated?

2mumlife · 25/06/2022 16:12

@PhoenixSTL Opposite situation here - I'm testing positive but partner isn't so far. Thats interesting you were told to call triage. I popped a message on my midwifery teams voicemail yesterday just to say I'd tested positive and never got a call back, so just been thinking their thoughts are "yeah sure whatever". Don't imagine my risk score would be high. At the moment I'm doing ok, just unbelievably tired and because all I want to do is lie down my heartburn is horrendous at the moment. How are you feeling?

@EllieJai44 I seem to have the typical third trimest thing of no fever. Seems the earlier in pregnancy you have covid the less of an impact it has on pregnancy so a bit gutted its hit now of all times.

@AntiHop Yup.

@2mumlife my risk score went up from 2 to 3 with covid, which was enough to put me on the blood thinning injections. Symptoms aren't too bad - it's mostly a bad cold with some dizziness at the moment. The triage in my area were really reassuring, and very quick to get me the things I needed, so they're always worth a call I think.

2mumlife · 26/06/2022 12:21

@PhoenixSTL The dizziness would be annoying, but glad you're not feeling too bad. I'm in Scotland and our covid cases are through the roof at the moment... Thanks for the advice. I'm already feeling better today than I did yesterday, so I think I'll just leave it calling triage unless there is anything worrying. Fetus has stayed lively which is reassuring.

When I called midwife to say I have COVID at 25 weeks they were like that's a shame hope you feel better soon and that was that. I mean my MAU has been shocking but I had expected a little more concern based on what I'd read online. But all was fine, I think if you were further on they might be different?!

Also, don't call 111 in Scotland - this is advice from my midwife. The wait times are 6hrs + at times that you sit on hold for the entire time and it's really really stressful to feel like you can't access heath care!

The friend I stayed overnight with two days ago tested positive for covid yesterday as I was about to leave. She had none of the hallmark symptoms. I had it in the first trimester, but risks are a bit different to risks in third trimester. So, yes, I am now worried too about preterm birth and increased risk of neurodev problems for baby... Going to do a test toda, of course, but it might not show yet. This will feel like a long wait.

I had it in the first trimester and felt awful. Now have it again at 26 weeks (even though I’m jabbed to the max - lucky me!) and at the minute it just feels like a bad cold so fingers crossed it doesn’t get any worse. I’ve taken a few days off work and am resting, eating lots of fruit and staying hydrated. Midwife doesn’t seem concerned. Hope you feel ok x

Peasplease12 · 28/06/2022 17:19

Just tested positive at 26 weeks. Feel achy and tired as well as cold/ flu type stuff. Midwife just said to get plenty of rest and fluids unless baby’s movements change or I have difficulty breathing, in which case, to call the emergency number

Tnib · 31/07/2022 11:35

I tested positive yesterday and I’m 28 weeks. This is also my first positive covid test. I rang the triage service as that was suggested when I googled NHS, and they say baby will be fine. I don't have a risk of blood clots…

I was concerned, and cried when talking to the midwife but she said the baby is protected….the baby is moving around, so hoping all is well.

I’m feeling okay at the moment. I’ve been resting a lot and drinking water. I’ve had 3 jabs. I think the last one which I got in December last year has worn off and that’s why people are getting ill again.

This post is now quite old, so not sure you’ll see my reply. Did you cut your contacts back since you got covid?

Squiff70 · 31/07/2022 12:59

I tested positive last Monday at 35+4 and on Tuesday I was admitted to hospital with low oxygen saturation, very high respiration rate, high temperature etc. I had to spend 24 hours in HDU on oxygen having tests etc and baby was carefully monitored too. I had to have steroid injections in case they needed to deliver him early but thankfully I improved overnight and after another couple of days I was back home.

Covid is very dangerous, but babies are well protected. It's vital to add that if you feel really unwell or start having problems with your breathing (in whatever form), you must absolutely seek immediate medical help.

Tnib · 31/07/2022 15:16

Glad you’re back at home, that’s brilliant news.

Yes the midwife did say to seek help if I’m having trouble breathing, I omitted that. I definitely would do that straight away. Thank you so much for the reminder.
