Pregnancy teeth

Hi all,

I’ve heard many women talk about their teeth falling out/breaking etc during pregnancy
I’ve always had sensitive and weak teeth so now that I’m pregnant I’m really worried about them getting worse. Is there anything I can do to avoid this aside from normal teeth routine and avoiding sugar?

Thanks

Talk to your dentist. You get free dental check ups during pregnancy and for a year after you've had your baby.

They can give you the best advice.

Use your maternity exemption to get regular check ups! I didn’t loose teeth or have them break but I got what my dentist called pregnancy gum disease. Apparently due to the change in hormones

i started using a special tooth paste and mouth wash to help

I have very sensitive teeth and have always had problems with them. Two broke very easily cries
I didn’t have any problems with my teeth when I was pregnant other than my gums bleeding a bit when brushing.
Definitely do as others have suggested and have more regular check ups while you have your exemption.

Check ups and a decent multivitamin - babies are excellent parasites including when breastfeeding (I've had 3)

Unfortunately, there is not much you can do. I had very bad gums, in some places they started to separate from my teeth during pregnancy. It was painful and I struggled to brush them as pure blood came out. However, they went back to normal a few weeks after giving birth. Vitamins and healthy diet may help. Tell your dentist you are worried and he can put you on a waiting list for the dental hospital if you need any little surgery etc. I didn't end up going in as my problem went away but always good to be prepared especially if you have sensitive gums.

See a hygienist and be guided by them on how often you need your teeth cleaned. Bleeding is a sign of inflammation and bacterial infection. You want all that cleaned out regularly so they have the best chance of healing properly after you’ve given birth. Otherwise the gum disease gets a good grip and carries on damaging your teeth and gums.

Dim question but I've always had private dentists and they've never given free check ups during pregnancy. Should they be?? I have incredibly sensitive teeth and pregnancy makes them worse.

Apparently a big part of the issues pregnant women have is down to grazing. Lots of small meals are worse than three big ones, even if the actual foods aren't the particularly damaging ones. So I guess you could try to limit the number of times you eat per day? Tricky if you get morning sickness though. And when you get really big at the end and there's not much space in your stomach...

It’s only NHS dentistry where pregnant women are exempt from charges, not private.

@Porridgeislife Ah thank you, I thought that was the case but then started second guessing myself.

I have only had 1 filling before being pregnant, then after my first I've had 6

However it could also be said that I don't keep as good dental hygene (definitely don't have a full 2 mins to brush on a morning and night)

Be scrupulous about dental hygiene, go for regular check ups, take your vitamins especially vitamin D, get plenty of calcium and cut down on sugar, especially in drinks.
