Reduced movements at 20 weeks? Normal?

Hey guys, I’m currently 20+1 and I have an anterior placenta. I’ve been feeling tiny movements over the last couple of weeks, just really small movements and nothing too crazy. However, these movements seem to have reduced since yesterday. I am still feeling really slight flutters but it doesn’t feel like it did last week. I had my anatomy scan on Monday and everything looked good, baby seemed to be moving a lot and it was difficult to get some measurements but I didn’t feel the movements!

I hate having an anterior placenta after recurrent miscarriage. Is this normal though guys? I do get really tiny flutters but they’re not as strong as they were last week, even though they were tiny flutters last week too if you get what I mean.

you can call the pregnancy unit number today for advice. Sorry I don’t have more advice or experience.

Ask your midwife and never rely on mumsnet for stuff like this again. When it comes to unborn babies always take it straight to the professionals.

bogoblin · 23/06/2022 18:10

At 20 weeks the baby is still really small and can hide away in all sorts of spots you can't feel them in. I never felt any of the gymnastics mine were doing at my 20 week scans.

Likely baby has just moved position to a spot where you can't feel them. Definitely phone up if you're worried but as it's still early for feeling movement at all, I'm not sure what the mac would actually do.

Oliveandbay · 23/06/2022 18:10

Go get checked out. I had an AP and still felt strong movements. I'm sure it's all fine but no harm in getting checked.

dreamerkr · 23/06/2022 18:11

I’ve texted my midwife, I hope she replies soon. She doesn’t answer her phone much :(
I felt some slight movements a few minutes ago, I am getting movements but they’re less than before. Apparently it’s normal with an anterior placenta? I don’t know though

Thanks so much guys, if I don’t feel more movements in the next hour I’m gonna call up my midwife or at least try to. If she doesn’t answer I’ll call the maternity unit. Most likely baby has moved into a different place, it has moved higher I know since I had my scan a few days ago.
it’s crazy how I couldn’t feel anything but the baby was constantly moving during the scan! But I still want to be reassured that everything is okay.

Definitely call maternity and go get checked. They can listen to baby’s heart beat and reassure you. Stress is not good for you or baby and they would much rather see you and put your mind to rest

dreamerkr · 23/06/2022 18:19

Thank you so much :( I’m trying to call the maternity unit their number’s busy right now but hopefully I’ll get hold of them soon.

I remember similar happening to me, I was told to lie down quietly, drink a glass or orange juice and wait, baby started moving again.

Definitely get checked though, for peace of mind.

themessygarden · 23/06/2022 18:21

"Orange juice is an effective way to encourage fetal movement. Most notably, the sugar in orange juice can jostle a sleeping baby and get her moving again. The sugary orange juice should have a quick effect on your baby -- you should be able to feel movements just a few minutes after you drink the juice."

dreamerkr · 23/06/2022 18:21

I did drink some orange juice an hour ago and I am feeling movements but they’re just not as strong as they were last week

Also, I do have a fetal Doppler at home (probably not a good idea, I know) and I tried using it today, and baby’s heart rate seems fine on that. I know better than to rely on that for reassurance though.

I called triage and they told me to come in to check baby’s heartbeat so I’m going now. Fingers crossed everything is okay

Dangerous advice

if a baby is inactive and there’s a problem artificially giving it a boost and forcing movement will then lead to a false sense of security.

if movements are less get checked out

dreamerkr · 23/06/2022 19:30

Okay never mind. I’ve started feeling movements again right after calling triage and being told I can go in. 🙄

Go anyway and get looked at. I went a couple of times during pregnancy and they were so lovely. Never doubt yourself, it's always worth being checked x

YungDumbThrills · 23/06/2022 19:55

I agree with PP, go in and get checked, they would rather you go and everything be ok than not go and something happen.

Caspianberg · 23/06/2022 20:01

Go and get checked

However, it’s normal to not feel anything at 20 weeks. I don’t think I felt Ds at all until 22/23 weeks and then super faint until about 35 weeks. And he was doing summersaults on the scans.

I have gone in

Hope everything is ok. I’ve been in a couple of times with movements. It is normal in 2nd trimester for the baby to move to a position where you will feel them less, but they do encourage you to go and get checked out if you’re worried.

I had this every time I got concerned about movements! They started wriggling around straight after I had called the unit and arranged to go in! I still went in though and I would def suggest you do too. They never mind you going in with reduced movements.

dreamerkr · 23/06/2022 21:15

Everything seems fine, thankfully! Baby has a strong heartbeat, the reduced movements were most likely because baby is now higher up, near my bellybutton! As soon as I got home baby started going crazy 😂 thank you so much guys!
