Antidepressants in pregnancy

Hi, I started a thread last night about my anxiety. I'm seriously considering going into medication for this now. I haven't taken any antidepressants (fluoxetine) for about 3-4 years and now so I am worried. And also worried because of the anxiety!

I've tried just riding it out but it seems I just keep worrying I go from one thing to the next. It's starting to affect my relationship now.
I've done a quick google of Sertraline in pregnancy on nhs who say it is safe.
Would like to hear any experiences of ladies who are on it or more specifically started it during pregnancy. I'm 24+2.

I also take 30/500 cocodamol for pgp - is it sage to take these at the same time ?
Thank you

Hi not personally taken antidepressants in pregnancy before but am considering it also this time. I spoke with my consultant yesterday and she was very clear that sertraline is safe to take during pregnancy. She also said a few others are too. Can’t help with the cocodamol but I think it’s only an issue if you are taking lots until delivery and the baby can get withdrawals after x

I took sertraline throughout my pregnancy as advised by my consultant and the peri natal mental health team. I was on the max dose already but my consultant said she would have suggested I go up to it if I wasn't as it can be helpful to prevent against PND (as well as dealing with issues in pregnancy). I also take 30/500 and there's no interaction with sertraline as far as I know.

Thank you both ! I've been stressing stressing about it all day not knowing what to do.
I'm worried I'm going to put the baby through withdrawal but at the same time I just can't relax and enjoy my pregnancy atm !! I just want to know it isn't going to do any harm.

@mynameiscalypso do you take the cocodamol daily ? I'm trying not too

I'm not pregnant anymore and only took it sporadically during my pregnancy. In general, pregnant or not, I always try to take the lowest possible amount but I get told off for doing that by my doctor! Sorry, that's not very helpful!

I took citalopram throughout my entire pregnancy; my son is now nearly 2 and he is the happiest healthiest little thing! I'm taking it through this one too, for me it's important to keep my mental health on an even keel, particularly throughout such a tumultuous time. Lots and lots of women have taken antidepressants throughout their pregnancies and their babies have been fine. Enough studies have been done on certain antidepressants for them to deem them safe for use. I can't help on the cocodamol front I'm afraid.

Congrats and best of luck with your pregnancy!

I'm.on fluoxetine just now due to previous miscarriages im nearly 11weeks pregnant

isitreallymeor · 23/06/2022 06:48

Thank you everyone. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and just do it. I do have my good days but more times than not I'm worrying about something and i can get myself so upset over things it can't be good for me.

Years ago I got put on sertraline but didn't last long as it was giving me bad night sweats. If this was to happen again would it be a dehydration issue regarding the baby ?

Have you tried a mindfulness app? Like Calm? I find them soooo helpful, took a couple of weeks but now I don’t have any anxiety.

On balance OP the risks from taking medication are probably outweighed by the impact of all the adrenaline and cortisol your anxiety is producing in your body. If taking a tablet which has been proven to be safe means you can relax and enjoy your pregnancy, I'd go for it.
You could also get some talking therapies and start to practice some relaxation/mindfulness techniques so they're already familiar and working, once baby arrives you could reduce your dose or wean off it and you'll already have the anxiety management skills in place.
Win-win!

Hi op, I'm pregnant and on sertraline. My psych was very reassuring, and said it's much safer for me to carry on taking it, than risk my mental health. Minimal interaction with the baby.
Please make sure you get all the help you need in pregnancy- are you under the perinatal mental health team? They are great, ask your midwife if not
