Induction - second baby

Hi!

I had my first baby spontaneously at 36 weeks, vaginal delivery no intervention etc.

I'm expecting my second now and have an induction booked at 39 weeks due to babies size (tracking small).

I've been seeing some horror stories about inductions and looking for peoples experiences good and bad for second baby inductions (if there might be a difference for a second baby!). I'm getting a sweep at 38 weeks so if anyone had sweep done before induction did that speed anything up?!

I'm getting worried as I've heard some women taking days to get to the delivery stage and I have to stay in hospital the whole time to be monitored and have a sixteen month old at home. So I need to consider what I will do with him if I'm stuck in a long time....

I’m similar in that first was fast natural delivery 34.5 weeks, currently expecting second, with my doctor allowing an induction at 39 weeks. I’ve asked and she said that an induction on a second labour tends to be very successful compared to on a first one, and very few go to a c section comparatively. My sister had an induced second, and no complaints too.

I was in induced the other day for my first child, I had the pessery to begin with which didn’t work I had to stay there was 24 hrs, they then used the gel and witching 4 hours my waters went and then she arrived 5.5 hrs later. So happened very quick for me.

I'll preface by saying it sounds bad, but it wasn't.

Out of interest, what are your current plans for your son for when you go into hospital? I was unfortunately one of those ladies who took ages to get to the delivery stage. So definitely make plans for it taking a couple of days.

I was being induced at 37 weeks due to pre-eclampsia (same as first). I started with a completely closed cervix, and a single gel got me to 2cm within 6 hours. Straight into ARM territory. However due to a bit of a baby boom and the ever present staffing issues, I was unable to be taken down to continue the process until 4 days later. Fortunately I wasn't in any way shape or form in labour, so I was perfectly comfortable. But it was depressing having to wait. Especially as I could only see DD out on the hospital grounds (no children allowed on the wards). The midwives were so good about keeping me updated, and I was really well cared for.

Finally there was space on delivery suite, and the induction continued. Had monitoring, waters broken, and (as before) labour didn't start, so I had the drip. I'd coped on the drip before without an epidural. As the expectation is that second children come quicker and easier, I felt I'd be ok without one again. And I was. I was able to move around and reposition myself, and managed on gas and air for a long while. The drip was even maxed out.

Everything was going great. Except I was making very little progress. Baby was still high, and after ~10 hours on the drip I'd only gone from 2cm to 5cm. With my first, in the same time frame I was nearly 10cm by this point. Things were really starting to hurt, and I was getting tired, so I asked for the epidural. As it was handover, and there was already someone waiting, I had to wait a couple of hours. The drip was turned off, but contractions continued, which was quite unpleasant.

Epidural was inserted, and much relief was had. Drip was left off for an hour to see if baby would passively descend, then put on again for an hour to see if any progress was made. I slept. Best 2 hours I've ever had. Unfortunately after those 2 hours baby had not descended, zero progress had been made, and there were now minor signs of distress on the CTG. So the decision was made to have a caesarean.

Caesarean revealed that baby was back to back, and was trying to look up. He was stuck, and I would never have been able to deliver vaginally. I don't regret attempting the induction in the slightest. The malposition was always going to occur, and there was no way to predict it would happen ahead of time. Other than the wound taking its sweet time healing, recovery has been fine, and I now have a perfect 3 month old.

I know it sounds awful, but it really wasn't, even at the time. I felt calm and in control throughout. I hope your induction goes more like my first. Drip was needed, but after 11 hours I delivered my DD with a minor second degree tear. Best of luck!

Hi, I had a reasonably easy quick natural first delivery bang on due date. With my second was recommended induction at 39+5 due to my age being a risk factor.

Firstly I had a very stressful two weeks leading up to it as my toddler had covid and this before vaccinations so was terrified about the impact for all us. Somehow partner and I didn't catch it.

I found the first part of the induction really relaxing. I had the pessary, got me to 2 cm after 24 hours on the ward. No pain. Spent my time watching tv on my tablet eating my snacks - both rest I had in two weeks. And as a plus they monitor the baby so you feel safe.

Went to labour ward to have my waters broken. Then they were not happy with the readings and after 3 hours of monitoring I ad a c-section. No contractions but what felt like excellent care and good decision making

I had an induction with my second after a spontaneous labour with my first. I was told that for most women, you have a good chance of the induction working if you had previously had a spontaneous labour. It was certainly the case with me; pessary in the early afternoon Tuesday and baby arrived 8am on the Wednesday, about an hour after my waters broke. Good luck!

Both of mine were inductions

DS1 at 35 weeks after my waters broke and no contractions
DS2 37 weeks, planned due to size (big)

Both we’re about 12 hours from start to finish. Pitocin drip and epidurals. DS2 I ended up with an episiotomy due to big shoulders and getting a bit stuck.

No problems with either of them.
