Pram choice - Head or heart?

I am really struggling to decide between the Silver Cross Reef (in Earth) or the Uppababy Vista V2 (colour undecided). We whittled it down to these 2 as both are all-terrain, the carrycots can be used for overnight sleeping, good storage underneath and seemed fairly easy to fold down (all of which are important to us).

I prefer the look and style of the Reef and before going to the shop to see them in person thought that would definitely be the one we get, however the Vista has additional functionality that it can easily be converted to carry 2 babies/toddlers. We would like to have a second baby but struggled to conceive this baby and have had 4 losses before making it this far (currently 26 weeks) so it may be difficult to have a second.

The Vista seems to be quite well-established and is really highly rated. The Reef is still really new so has limited reviews, although what I can see is very positive. The Vista seems to be more readily available so wouldn’t be an issue to order later, but the Reef has a bit of a wait to get so would need to order ASAP.

I’m really struggling to decide between the two. My head is saying the Vista but my heart is saying the Reef. If we got the Vista, I don’t know if I would always regret not going with my heart and getting the Reef whenever I looked at it, but then if we got the Reef and I did end up pregnant again, would I regret not being sensible and going for the Vista? But then if we got the Vista and I couldn’t have a second baby, would that make it worse? Agghhh!!

Any advice on which you would go for - be sensible and follow your head or after everything we’ve been through to get here, follow your heart and get the one you love?

Have you considered the silvercross wave? That can convert to a double and seems similar to the Reef.

We bought our pram with our first without even a thought of a second coming along so soon. We're now due a 2yr4m age gap and having to fork out another £1k on prams for those just in case or naptimes whilst out moments. If I even thought at the time there could be a chance we'd need a double I'd have definitely made it a priority.

You know you don't have to spend a grand on a pram. In fact, to do so is bloody ridiculous

Whichever one is lighter and easier to fold down or cart about. Honestly, it's not an emotional thing - just practical and once your baby is here you won't give a shit what it looks like, just whether it's easy!

Go with your head. Its a pram. You honestly won't care once your child is older. No one lovingly reminisces about their children's pram.

This. By the time it had been here, there and every where and absolutely trashed, I was glad to get rid of ours after five years.

Don't get too precious about a carry cot. I had two babies who hated being laid flat and who were enormous. So the carry cot got used a handful of times with both kids.

Get the one with the biggest shopping basket and that can fit in the boot of your car easiest.

Meanwhile, I spent all of £100 on a second hand double Out and about Nipper when I had a very similar age gap. You don't need to be spending £1k on the off chance your toddler might nap on a day out.

We have the Vista and I absolutely love it. We chose the beautiful sage green colour and I think it looks lovely. The huge basket underneath has been one of the best features for us as well as how easy it is to take apart and fold up to put in the car etc. Also liked the fact that the bassinet is approved for safe overnight sleep which was handy for overnight trips in the early days.

I would say though one of the main reasons we went for the Vista was the possibility of adding a second seat if we had another child. However in reality when DC2 arrived, DC1 was just under 2 and for the cost of getting the adaptors and a second seat we didn’t feel we would get long enough use out of it to be worthwhile. For the first 6months or so we carried baby in the baby carrier and toddler was in pram and by the time baby went into the pram, toddler was happy to walk or use the buggy board (with seat) when needs be. A second hand double buggy would have been a good option too. So basically, if that’s your main/only reason for going with the vista, don’t do it! 😊 It’s a fab pram though and definitely hands down one of our top baby purchases!

I love my Uppababy Vista. Mine is second hand off my brother, so it's been through their 2 children. My boy is now 16 months and it's still amazing condition and used all the time. I loved that the carry cot was safe for overnight sleeping, not that he slept in it at night but I used it for daytime naps and made me reassured it was well ventilated and safe for him. Its practical but I also think they're lovely looking.

I wouldn’t let the fact that the Vista converts to a double sway you too much. I just sold mine because it’s really cumbersome as a double and the babies get a really restricted view.

Skyeheather · 21/06/2022 14:18

Don't think about the next baby, by the time I had my second my pram was worn and dirty and I insisted on a completely new pram for baby no. 2!

Also it look much longer to conceive my second that I had planned. By the time my second came along my first was too big for a pushchair so a second seat was never needed.

GodspeedJune · 10/07/2022 18:00

@redlou123 If you’re still about, do you mind me asking which pushchair you went for? We are also stuck between the vista and reef!

Tacoboutit · 10/07/2022 22:42

Just jumping in here but I collected my Reef last week and absolutely love it 😍 sooo easy to fold and the carry cot seems quite big in comparison to others so hopefully baby can get a little longer out of it. However I’ve not actually used it yet properly yet so can’t give a proper review.

I went with the Reef in the end. I'm still waiting for it to be delivered though so don't actually have it yet. We ended up going back in to look at them again and I noticed 2 things that put me off the Vista slightly - the bar across the basket at the bottom I thought might get a bit annoying if I wanted to put a larger bag in the basket and I realised you did need 2 hands to fold it down, not one (I'm sure we were told in the first shop that it was one-handed). Both minor points in the grand scheme of things but it made me feel a bit more comfortable about going for the Reef, in addition to people on here saying the Vista has really heavy when used for multiple babies. We also hadn't seen the colour Vista we would get in the flesh (we would have gotten the green one) so it felt like more of a gamble. Am excited to get the Reef now!

Thanks @Tacoboutit - that is really good to hear! That's the one I've gone for and so hoping I love it too.

Congrats OP, buy the pram you love. And if you have another baby in the future, who’s says you can’t get another pram. Buy what you want for now. I brought a travel system with my first baby, then a stroller to keep in DH car, (as on a couple of occasions we would realise we hadn’t transferred the pram part of the travel system from my car to DH) then bought another easy one handed fold up lightweight stroller if I was taking a bus, then DS2 arrived 21mths later and we bought a Twin Mountain Buggy which was amazing for two under two. What I am trying to say is you are never going to buy a pram that is great for every purpose. Good luck.

Roselilly36 · 11/07/2022 06:55

X post, pleased you bought the one you love, enjoy it!

User0610134049 · 11/07/2022 06:56

Both sound like they’ll be fine
I wouldn’t take into account convertibility to a double. You just don’t know what’s going to happen. We ended up with a 3 year age gap and a buggy board worked for us. Didn’t need a double.

GodspeedJune · 11/07/2022 07:08

@Tacoboutit So pleased you love yours on first impressions at home!

@redlou123 Thanks for coming back to the thread. I can’t wait to just get the decision made and look forward to the excitement of it arriving -
and the baby of course Grin

It feels like salespeople have been less encouraging about silver cross but I can’t understand why - they must be doing something right to have been trading for so long. I was leaning slightly towards the vista because it gets such rave reviews and felt lighter to manoeuvre. But it’s not a fair comparison when the reef is too new to have many reviews and in store yesterday when comparing both models the salesman said the SC is actually marginally lighter! I do love the look of it too, so very tempted to go for the reef now.
