Baby's moved back to back at 38+4

Hi! Went for my routine midwife app (38weeks) I'm 38+4 - baby's been in the correct position up until now he's moved back to back and I'm worrying now! Has anyone else had this and did baby turn again? I've heard back to back labour can be pretty awful 😳

Both mine were back to back upon the onset of labour. They turned during labour, but with augmentation and epidural. I would have have wanted an epidural anyway so for me it wasn't really an issue that I had to have one for the augmentation.

@TulipCat thanks for the reply! Were you in labour long with both? Did you also feel labour start with back pain more than the front ?

Definitely pain across the back with mine, prior to the epidural. I was in labour much longer with my first than second, because I was initially on the midwife led unit and had to wait for a transfer to the main labour ward. For the second I had wised up and went straight for the main labour ward! So it was 71 hours with DC1 but 16 with DC2. For a lot of those 71 hours though, not a lot was happening so I wasn't in pain thankfully!

Definitely try spinning babies techniques to get baby into the right position again!

Ishacoco · 15/06/2022 15:49

My dd was back to back and I felt nothing across my front, only in my back. It was bloody painful but the epidural did its job.

firsttimemomma93 · 15/06/2022 19:23

@TulipCat wow 71 hours! 😳 it's just worried me he's been in the same position the last 10 weeks now decides to move haha! Hoping he turns back but I can't seem to tell as he's so wiggly!
@Juno231 what are spinning baby techniques?
@Ishacoco did they recommend epidural because of baby's position?

Midwives can’t always tell (midwife said back to back, immediately after had a scan which showed otherwise). Also they spin around from back to front at the beginning of labour often. It’s more of an issue if they’re breach.

firsttimemomma93 · 15/06/2022 20:19

@DarlingDarwin that's good to know thank you, I feel like he may of already turned back as sure it's his bum I can feel poking up ! Haha. Yeah I thought that, at-least he's not breach 😳

Fingers crossed!!!

Ishacoco · 15/06/2022 23:24

No, I requested demanded an epidural. Oh, my labour was also 71 1/2 hrs 😳

winterbabyrose · 16/06/2022 12:58

My DD was back to back but it was undiagnosed so didn't know until my waters went a few hours into labouring at the hospital. Because of her positioning, I had to have an EMCS due to her heart rate dropping because of the positioning.

I don't want to worry you at all of course, we are both well and everything was fine, but just something to bear in mind that your birth plan you intend to have may not go to plan if baby is still back to back and may need to come out the sunroof x

mummyh2016 · 16/06/2022 13:53

My first baby was back to back, took 4 hours pushing. I could've cried when I was told at 36 weeks my second baby was back to back. I sat on my ball a lot. Couple of days later I had a growth scan and he had turned back round.

firsttimemomma93 · 17/06/2022 03:05

@Ishacoco I don't blame you with that long in labour!

Well I had my little boy last night after 17 hours in labour I had to go for emergency c-sec because his heart rate being up and down and being back to back! (same as you @winterbabyrose ) I was shocked about it and not prepared but my little boy arrived safely 9 days early and I'm in love 🥰

@mummyh2016 glad your second one moved! It's a very painful position for them to be in when having contractions 😖 never felt pain like it 😂

DS was back to back. Contractions felt like someone was wringing both my kidneys out. No pain relief (diamorphine as I was exhausted) until the 78th hour. He was born after 80 hours.

@firsttimemomma93 congratulations!!
