Hi everyone,

Is this a thing? It's 4:50 and I've been awake since DH went to the toilet at 3:30. I've never in my life had problems sleeping and didn't have insomnia with my DS. I'm only 7 weeks tomorrow and have been waking up early (for me anyway, around 6ish) but this is something else! For nearly an hour and a half I've been lying in the dark feeling like I've had a full night's sleep.

I'm about to get up and watch TV before I wake DS with my tossing and turning 😅

I never thought insomnia could be pregnancy related

Hi

I was just wondering if anyone has experienced anything like I am in very early pregnancy.

I have just undergone IVF and was fortunately successful. However i am currently taking Progesterone hormone which ive been told i have to take for the first 8 weeks. I have been on them now for 3 weeks.

Since the very start of my pregnacy ive been struggling with severe Insomnia, which ive never suffered sleep issues before. I struggle to get to sleep and staying asleep my brain feels completely wired and on overdrive. I am now suffering from anxiety as I cannot see this improving and I feel completely exhausted and cannot stop crying.

Does anyone know what could be happening to me?

Lisa

@LisaMcDen hi my lovelie, firstly congratulations on your pregnancy! I had the exact same so called pregnancy insomnia - I didn’t even know it was a thing until DH googled it! I would take forever to fall asleep, sometimes gone 3am and would be in and out of light sleep till morning. I constantly felt like I never got a good nights sleep and it’s truely horrible! Your brain is wired and you just cannot turn off! I tried sleep music, not using my phone or tv an hour before bed and reading but to be honest none of it helped!

All I can say is it does get better, I’m currently 10+4 and also an IVF pregnancy and while I do still suffer with it a bit it’s definitely very much improved and can say I’ve slept well some nights. Also it really doesn’t help that every time I move I need to get up too pee 🙈🙈 hold on in there it will get better and if you can try and take naps during the day just do it! Xx

Thank you so much for responding to me as I feel like my mental health is being impacted as im such an anxious person and its gopd to know that this sleep issue isnt my doing as such. Ive tried absoulutely everything!

I feel the worst thing is that the more I need sleep the less I can and I dont know how to get out of this loop.

What do you think caused your insomnia, im so sorry to hear you have had the same, how long did it last? Was you also taking Progesterone with the IVF?

Hi @LisaMcDen I'm the original poster and am now 15+1. If it makes you feel better, I am sleeping much better again now! I was constantly up a few hours during the night and now, I'm sleeping through again save from using the toilet 2-3 times 😅

I took a magnesium supplement, strong dosage and it as soon as I started that, my sleeping improved so much. It would be worth a try.

My first born was conceived through icsi and I was taking progesterone and I didn't have insomnia issues with him. This isn't second pregnancy and it was naturally conceived and I've had the insomnia so I don't think the progesterone is making any difference. Sounds like normal first trimester hormones sadly. Keeping my fingers crossed for you that you start sleeping better in the second trimester

Thanks for coming back to me and Im so glad to hear your sleeping better now, its reassuring to know it may get better, it does sound then more like the Pregnancy hormones! I never imagined this was a thing and I keep thinking this is my anxiety doing this to me.

I will try some Magnesium as I do have some in the cupboard somewhere 😊

Yea I think it’s just the pregnancy hormones at play here, most ppl complain of tiredness and sleeping loads but here we are wishing we got just a-few hours of good quality sleep! The heat deffo makes it worse too!

i get into the same loop too! I worry and panic that I’m not going to sleep then it just makes it 10 times worse! You will get through this and I promise it does get better with time.

I was also on progesterone - utrogestan and lubion injections until 8 weeks, but still continued to have bad sleep once I’d finished them. I still have some problems sleeping but I’m definitely finding I have more better nights than bad ones now at 10+4.

you will get through it, also be interesting to see if the magnesium works as suggested by @Ohrwurm thats deffo good to know for the future, just in case xx
