Positive tests 3 months after miscarriage

Ok so I can’t really find anything online which may be relevant to my situation. :(
i had a miscarriage at 10 weeks back in the middle of March. I had confirmed RPOC in the weeks following and was given medical management, but still got positive tests afterwards. I’ve been back and forward to the EPU, since April, having blood tests. The levels are low but persistent. Had a scan at end of May and they couldn’t see anything of concern or anything untoward. My first period since the miscarriage came about 3 weeks ago, it lasted around 9 days. It’s now finished and I’m still getting positive tests. I am having my HCG checked regularly and it’s low but stubborn and at my last blood test it had risen again. Really getting me down. I’m back for repeat bloods on Friday of this week. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

I had a similar experience, for me it was caused by retained pregnancy tissue. Because the womb collapses flat again after pregnancy they kept missing the tissue in the scans.

Later they thought I might have a polyp, which was then found to be scarring from the retained products of pregnancy being left untreated for so long.

Scarring caused by retained products (and polyps) cause in infertility by preventing implantation. It can be fixed if caught early, so keep pushing for this to be investigated.

Ask for a saline scan or a hyscopy. If your clinic won’t do it, consider going private.

I'd be concerned about retained tissue too.

Mumjo101315 · 20/06/2022 06:59

Thanks @SQLserved and@babyjellyfish
went back Friday for bloods and the HCG is still in my blood. I knew it would be. :( I ended up with a scan - which showed nothing significant, did have a corpus luteum though which surprised me, consultant said you can ovulate with low HCG.
they’ve agreed to give me surgery and it is being done tomorrow, and they will also use a camera and ultrasound to make sure they’ve got it all.
thank you again for your replies xx I am so so relieved that it will finally be sorted (hopefully)
really hope that my insides are ok as it has been a long time and that I finally get a negative pregnancy test soon after the op x😅

I kept pushing and around two months after my first op, I had a second. They told me medical management likely wouldn't work for my RPOC (not sure if that was a general thing or unique to my case for some reason, unknown to me). Second op fixed it, it was a better, more thorough surgeon and they used a camera. Period didn't return for a few months still but hCG dropped quickly after that.

So sorry you're going through this. It's so heartbreaking when it drags on and I hope you get some closure soon. Flowers

startfresh · 20/06/2022 07:09

Oh just saw your full update, that's great! The person who scanned me didn't see anything. I pushed more and a higher consultant saw RPOC so I felt vindicated.

Mat44 · 20/06/2022 07:12

Could it have been a partial molar pregnancy? When I had one of those I had to have my hcg monitored for a few months as it slowly left my system. I was just over 10 weeks as well and the pregnancy looked normal on ultrasounds up to that point. They only discovered it was partial molar when examining the tissue after surgical management.

Mumjo101315 · 20/06/2022 20:55

Thanks@startfresh they can’t see anything on my scans either, but with the HCG rising and falling I think they’ve accepted it must be retained product. The fact that it’s been three months and it’s now causing me massive amounts of distress, they have decided eventually to give me surgery but I wanted it ages ago 😥 I am glad your situation resolved itself. I do want to try for another baby and this has been a stumbling block in that! Did you conceive again after your op? Xx

@Mat44 thanks for your reply. Yes I thought it may be a molar pregnancy?? They are sending the tissue off for testing, I didn’t know that they could find out molar pregnancies with the tissue I thought it was seen on an ultrasound. I heard they’re pretty rare, but I think I will know more after the tissue has been looked at xx
Im worried that the HCG levels will still be there even after the op - gotta do a pregnancy test 2 weeks post op - but I am hoping that the levels being up still isn’t possible!! Xxx

I was really worried that something went wrong as my periods didn’t return for a few more months. Then I got pregnant (maybe after one or two cycles) and had a very early (4/5 week miscarriage) and then I got pregnant straight away after that MC and gave birth to a VERY healthy baby.

So yes, all worked out well for me, I truly hope you can say the same one day soon.

Mumjo101315 · 20/06/2022 21:40

Thanks @startfresh this has given me hope, I do already have three lovely children (12, 8 and 7) but I have a real desire for one more!! With my new partner as not with my kids’ dad anymore. The miscarriage has made me lose a little faith in my body as generally it’s always done what I want it to, so this was a shock.
I’m happy your story has a happy ending xx😘

Thank you, I’m sure yours will, too! Hopefully you will have all the answers soon xx

Mat44 · 20/06/2022 21:53

@Mumjo101315 a full molar pregnancy is spotted on scans as there’s no baby, but a partial molar is when there’s a normal pregnancy there as well as molar tissue, so is often diagnosed from looking at the tissue after the pregnancy has already ended. I hope you get some answers soon - it’s horrible waiting for answers, but even if it is a partial molar it is likely that it will resolve itself and you will be cleared to try again soon xx

Thanks ladies xx
well I had a hysteroscopy yesterday. The surgeon came and found me before hand and explained why he didn’t want to do a full d&c. He said that they would be more likely to miss tissue just doing a full on scrape and he said with the camera they can see better and isolate where the issue lies. Anyway I had the op done under GA, and they did find retained products! 😅And removed them. I got to see a photo of what was left and it was like a piece of grey liver. He told me it was about the size of a broadbean. He also said it was unlikely to have come away anytime in the near future so this saga would have been ongoing, without the surgery. Its being sent away for testing to see exactly what it is. He said that the corpus luteum cyst seen on my ovary at my last scan likely wasn’t a ‘fresh’ ovulation, if you like. He said it is more likely the corpus luteum left over from when I ovulated when I got pregnant back in January and because the RPOC was making low level pregnancy hormones the cyst didn’t go away like it should have and my body believed it was sustaining a pregnancy the whole time. No wonder I’ve been a wreck with all these hormones flying about 😂I’m just glad to have answers and to finally feel listened to. Hopefully I won’t have to go in the EPU at my local hospital ever again, lovely as they are. I have to test in 10 days to a fortnight and if positive test I call back and speak to the surgeon but I hope that doesn’t happen xxx thank you all for replying to this thread x

What an ordeal for you.

I'm so glad you've got it sorted now and hope your body goes back to normal really quickly.

Is the scarring normal? Did your rpoc have. Blood flow? I had a 10 week misscarriage in September rpoc didn’t come out till end december
