Progesterone pregnancy support, when to stop?

I’ve been taking Cyclogest 400mg twice daily
since we found out we’re pregnant and was recommended to stop at 12 weeks. I’m at 15 weeks now and tapering off to 1 per day after reading taking it for longer could prevent miscarriage. Is there any risk to taking it longer?

I've been on progesterone since 14 weeks due to having a shortening cervix in my last pregnancy following lletz treatment, only on one a day, last time I was on three a day until 36 weeks, so I'd say not an issue

Great to know @annlee3817 - I appreciate you sharing this info! Glad all is well. Wondering if any other mums or mums-to-be else have a similar experience?

@Giigii84 how are you managing to keep taking it?

I've only been prescribed 12 weeks supply and told that's it but am terrified of stopping.

Is this something the doctor prescribes? If so how do you speak to them about it?

I’m taking duphaston 10mg x 2 and moving to cylogest- do you have my symptoms from taking it? The months we didn’t conceive I had fairly strong side effects from duphaston and nervous that the higher dose of cyclogest is going to make me worse than I already am! (Already have intense thirst, tiredness and nausea at 12DPO!)

I was started on it at 23 weeks and told to keep taking it till 36 weeks due to regular tightenings and history of preterm birth, LP though I'm just on 1x 400 mg a day.

I don't suppose it would do any harm to keep going but unless you have a short cervix or are prone to regular tightenings I can't see them doing much for you. Personally I am counting down the days till I can get rid of the horrible messy things.

@Giigii84 I started cyclogest at 6 weeks due to a history of miscarriages and a 30 week birth with my DS. I have been taking 400mg twice a day and will be on them until 37 weeks (if i get that far, currently 32 weeks) as instructed by my consultant - so I don't imagine there is any risk to taking them longer as she would have stopped me by now I'm sure!

heartbroken22 · 16/06/2022 12:16

@Beth262 did you have to speak to your doctor to be on them?

Beth262 · 16/06/2022 12:36

@heartbroken22 I was initially under the care of the EPU due to my previous miscarriages so the doctor there prescribed them. When I moved to consultant led care after my 12 week scan, they continued the prescription.
