How do you shop with a baby?

Yes I know this is prob a very silly question but it struck me as I was wandering around M&S the other day that I don't know what to do with a tiny baby (one who can't sit in the trolley seat yet) when I go shopping?
Any tips? Is it a case of putting the car seat in the trolley? Or just carrying them?
Feel free to ridicule me if this is truely a daft thing to ask but it's strange the random things that perplex you at 26 weeks!

I'm so impressed that you have even thought about this. It didn't cross my mind until my daughter was about two weeks old and we REALLY needed some food ...

In the earliest weeks, I went for big supermarkets, where you can attach the car seat to the top of a special trolley. Or getting someone else to do it.

Later on - sling or buggy, depending what you and your baby like best. And you get very good at packing far too much shopping into the bottom of your buggy and exceeding all the manufacturer's guidance about weight limits.

Surfermum did all these experts not realise that if they would just shut up and mind their own business you would be out of that shop complete with wailing baby so much quicker!

I was so ready with lots of retorts but of course each individual thinks that they are the only one to give you such "excellent" advice! Also it just prolongs the whole experience doesn't it? A sweet - fab idea but not quite the aim of blw

Babies cry in shops a) because small babies cry anywhere and everywhere
and b) they get p'd off in shops!

To the op - mostly it's fine I promise...

The were quite reserved with their advice until I admitted "he's not mine". They they really waded in .

dolly1 - what a great question. I hadn't even thought about that, but on next trip to sainsburys I'll be studying the trolley options very closely!

Buy one of those sheepskin buggy liners and when you go to supermarkets take it off the buggy and use it to line the trolley baby seat, not the wire ones the proper moulded plastic ones.

i used to put the car seat in a normal one as I couldn't steer so well with those ones on top.
or for a few little bits my basket would fit under my pushchair
