Have you seen GP? They can prescribe omeprazole which works wonders. My GP also recommended taking gaviscon before bed even if didn't feel unwell yet. And sleeping propped up. My husband propped up the mattress with cushions underneath and that helped a bit but omeprazole was the game changer.

You have my sympathy, heartburn is the worst

BethMancini · 10/06/2022 03:56

Noo, it’s only just started to get really bad before I could put up with it but not anymore, I’ve tried Gaviscon it worked for a bit but now doesn’t help me but I will see my GP and see if they help! Thankyou x

Omparezole was a life saver during my pregnancy. Deff speak to your GP tomorrow

IDreamOfTheMoors · 10/06/2022 04:48

Yes - omeprazole is a life saver.
Also, put blocks under the posts at the head of your bed, so that your body is at an angle — they need to be about 3” high. I believe you can get them on Amazon. They’ll keep the acids down in your stomach instead of up in your throat.
And keep water on your bedside — drink every time you feel heartburn coming on. That’ll help too.
And congratulations! ❤️

Another here for Omeprazole. I suffered too, not wanting to take medication, and I can still remember the relief at not having heartburn anymore!

All great advice from people. The other thing I've done is to try to avoid eating a meal after 5.30pm. Very boring but has made the world of difference for me in terms of the heartburn not being as bad during the night l.

As well as OTC medicine, I found sipping milk and sleeping propped up helped.

A teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water.. take this in the morning and repeat in the afternoon. Also take sips innthe evening / night if symptoms are bad. In a few days you should be able to just have it in the mornings.

Always worse for me on an empty stomach. Usual things such as sleeping slightly propped up, I found Rennies much easier to stomach than gaviscon. But ultimately, the relief from regular omeprazole was just the best. And whatever works for you… take it every night before bed even if you don’t have heartburn at that time. It’s not going to go away whilst pregnant so prevention helps to stop it waking you up.

Omerprazole helped me a lot too but I still need to take gaviscon sometimes. I also found eating too anything large after 7pm makes it really bad and some food is worse than others.

Don’t wait to contact your GP, I managed to get my Omerprazole super quick after requesting it, all online.

I'm 30 weeks and have been suffering heartburn myself. The things that have worked most for me are:

  1. Sleep on your left hand side, this helps keep the acid inside your stomach, lying on your right let's it out (the entrance to your stomach is on the right hand side)
  2. Taking Gaviscon before bed and then sitting up for about 30 mins to allow it to work before lying down
  3. Stop eating and drinking (except water) as early in the evening as possible. I was having a cup of tea before bed that I've now cut out and have water instead
  4. Raise the head of the bed slightly, I did this last pregnancy and it really helped, need to do it again.
I hope it gets better soon, some people say that it improves when the baby drops. X

Omeprazole. Got mine at 16 weeks this time as I refuse to suffer like last time!

Twizbe · 10/06/2022 11:18

Medication from the doctor for sure.

I had it terribly with both mine. I slept propped up on tons of pillows. I also basically drank gaviscon.

ToCaden · 10/06/2022 12:16

I have really bad heartburn and acid reflux. Some things that have helped me:

Omprazole. Rennies and gaviscon ( i find for some reason one will help for a bit, then stop working, but if i then switch to another brand that one works and so on).

Smaller meals, and try to stop eating as soon as your body allows in evening. I find if i eat too close to bedtime i get bad reflux, but if i stop eating too soon i can't fall asleep due to hunger. Play about to find the best time for you.

Milk. Not the full fat kind. As long as it doesn't contain too much fat i find it helps the reflux / heartburn. Also helps me fall asleep.

Gaviscon or rennies or tums dose before bed.

And something very unusual that works for me. When you get that horrible kind of heartburn where it feels like something is stuck at the bottom of your throat burning through it and none of above shifts it, i drink a fizzy drink. I then do a big burp and instant relief ( fizzy drinks aren't the best for reflux so only use it in these cases.)

Also sleep with your head propped up.
