Back to Back at 31 weeks

Hi, In two appointments the mid-wife suspects baby is back to back.

She says there is plenty of time for baby to turn, but the fact that back to back is explained as a slight negative and the other way is preferable, it does cause me a little worry.

I am 31 weeks and 3 days.

Any similar experiences of being back to back and then things change... or any experiences that baby doesn't turn and is delivered this way?

Presentation (basically baby's position within the womb) isn't really a concern until 36 weeks as before that they move frequently, or so I was told recently. I wouldn't worry at this stage OP.

startfresh · 09/06/2022 13:50

I'm sure mine started to move later than that and went back to back. It wasn't two appt on a row, but it worried me at the time. Ended up fine.

They could be in the perfect position then turn toward the end. Nothing to worry about at this stage, unless the qualified midwives and consultants tell you to be!

Babies at 31 weeks can be all over the show, I wouldn’t be too concerned at this stage.

All 3 of my babies were back to back at birth. It’s not like breech that causes any actual difficulties during birth. Just meant that my contracts were much more in my back and painful

BrightOrion · 09/06/2022 16:10

I just watched the positive birth company videos about turning baby naturally. Definitely worth it!

She basically says to sit upright, forward and open instead of leaning back as the back of the baby's head is the heaviest part so if you lean forward, i.e leaning forward on your birth ball, it should encourage them to turn.

Hope this helps!

Both of mine were back to back labours, me was even born sunny side up although they sometimes rotate during the birth as they fit through the pelvis better that way.!Hands on knees helps baby to rotate - so in your last week of pregnancy get down and scrub those floors! Sitting "slumped" with your pelvis tipped back encourages back to back presentation so try and avoid that - you could try sitting on a birth ball to watch TV for example. I also saw on osteopath because tight papas muscles can affect presentation too (although mine stubbornly refused to turn despite this but it did ease my backache!). If you get back pains in labour heatcompresses really help as does firm continuous pressure on the sacrum during contractions, try and labour off your back, all fours, side lying etc are better, and I highly recommend a water birth.

lurchermummy · 09/06/2022 16:11

That should say "psoas" muscles.

Hi OP. Both my babies were back to back at that stage and possibly later. I just tried to do some of the exercises they reccomend and not sit back on the couch etc and they both turned before next midwife app/ labour!

Back to back can cause a more difficult labour, not to the extent breach can but still more difficult. It took me 4 hours of pushing to get DD out who was back to back. Whereas DS who was the right was way out in 3 pushes.
Like others have said baby will likely move before then, if not moved my 36 weeks do all you can to get it moved. I could not do a back to back labour again without an epidural. Whilst labour is painful obviously, I didn't think I would be able to walk again when having DD.

Lovemusic33 · 09/06/2022 19:33

I gave birth to dd who was back to back with no pain relief 😬, I have to say it was awful, it took ages and I was close to giving up. I didn’t know she was back to back until I was in the final stages of labour. I think you have plenty of time for baby to move, hopefully baby will move and all will be fine, if not my advice would be to have a epidural.

lurchermummy · 09/06/2022 21:30

I had both my back to back labours without any pain relief at all. I'm not saying that to show off but just to say a back to back labour needn't be awful or something to be afraid of.

Ardmano · 09/06/2022 21:40

Not quite the same but my baby was breech at 34 weeks and I am sure that the advice on the spinning babies website is what encouraged him to turn. The advice there generally applies to optimal positioning so the excercises would also help you and your b2b baby

Chasingclouds100 · 09/06/2022 21:41

I too had a baby born back to back with no pain relief, he was my first so I didn’t really know what to expect but it was fine in all honestly just pains in my bottom rather than tummy - it couldn’t have been too bad as DC2 was born 18 months later, also back to back but turned last minute. Hope all goes ok with the rest of your pregnancy and the birth

Runkle · 09/06/2022 23:36

Don't worry, remember that without an actual scan any suspicions on presentation can be inaccurate (I had a midwife appointment in the morning guessing at one position and then a scan in the afternoon revealed the real position - this was at 30+ weeks so I would've felt a big turn in between appts). Mine was suspected back to back but it wasn't a concern and she got in the right position when she needed to. There's still time for them to move.

CheeseAndOnion · 09/06/2022 23:41

I had a straightforward back to back labour, done and dusted in just over four hours. One of mine turned during early labour apparently.
