28 weeks gaining enough weight?

Hello ladies,

I am seeing my midwife next week but she was a bit of a chocolate teapot at the first appt so I just wanted to get some feedback from you all from experience about what to expect or if I should have any concerns, please!

I fell pregnant but lost 3kg in first trimester due to really bad reflux. I was eating but couldn't eat big portions, fatty food made it worse and so I ate less of that. For context bmi was 19.5 by the time I saw midwife and she logged my weight at that point.

I have now regained the lost 3kg but only put on 2.5kg on top of that. I am not sure how much it matters, I know this varies for everyone. As soon as I try to increase my (very consistent 3 meals, plus snacks and normally dessert) the reflux is back hard and fast.

I have been stuck at this weight for at least a month. Bump is growing though! I am noticeably pregnant, but I am wondering if its reasonable and useful to ask for a scan to check baby's growth?
The 13 week and 20 week scan was normal, and I am nearly 40 if that has any bearing on advice.

Thank you for any advice!

I’m 31 weeks and been struggling with weight too. I’ve lost about 5kg since start of second trimester (and wasn’t overweight to start with), through vomiting and inability to eat big enough portions/get enough calories in each day- there simply isn’t space in my stomach as it doesn’t empty properly and baby presses up on it.

My midwife and consultant don’t seem concerned about baby- I am having growth scans for other (medical) reasons and he is 24th centile so doing fine. I on the other hand feel absolutely rubbish most of the time as I’m just not getting the energy/nutrition. So I definitely sympathise and feel your frustration! But so long as baby’s happy enough - just got to get through next 8 weeks (just a short few more for you).
The thing they always say to me is ‘babies are parasites’ - they will take what they need first and you get what’s left over.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable for you to ask for a growth scan - worst they can do is say no if e.g. your bump is measuring normally (is it?) and you’re not actively losing weight. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they agreed to put your mind at rest!

Sounds like enough. Unless there are concerns in your scan I wouldn't worry.

There's an outdated misconception that women need to pile on lots of weight during their pregnancy. If baby is healthy, weight will be added unless you're starving yourself.

Gosh that sounds awful... You have my sympathy! Thanks so much, you're right. Logically I know that lots of women have terrible sickness during pregnancy and their little ones come out fine. I will ask the midwife but if she isn't worried I will just tolerate the uncertainty until the 36 week scan and keep trying to get the snacks in. I hope everything goes well for you in the next 8 weeks. :)

Absolutely fine! For some reason people seem to think you need to eat for 2 or gain loads of weight when you’re pregnant. I’ve never gained more than a stone with any of my 3.
no need for a growth scan.

Thanks for commenting. I think that misconception is long gone, if you search "pregnancy and weight" everywhere stresses the importance of not gaining too much, eating healthily and getting enough exercise. Unfortunately I am definitely not on track re: weight gain, but baby is hopefully pulling what it needs from what it's got.
