Chicken pox and pregnancy

I am around 7-8 weeks pregnant and a teacher. One of my pupils came in on Monday with very clear chickenpox like scars all over his face. I asked him if he had had chickenpox over half term and he didn't really reply but started telling me how he scratched off all the scars. I thought it bizarre. Later on that day I got an email from someone else in school saying that I had taught a child with chickenpox today and that he will not be returning to school until NHS guidelines say it is safe to. I completely forgot about it until today when I saw email as it's been a very busy week! Do you think I need to worry? I'm pretty sure I had chickenpox when I was y younger. I didn't touch him and the closest we were was face to face normal speaking distance.

NHS advice is to contact 111 for advice if:

"you're pregnant and have not had chickenpox before, or you're not sure, and you've been near someone with chickenpox"

So how certain are you that you had it when younger?

If you had it as a child you are likely to be immune. If the chickenpox has scabbed over its no longer infectious

My mum says I have had it but I haven't questioned her much on it. I'll check again with her! Can't believe I forgot about it- so many emails have come into inbox since Monday because I'm organising a school trip!

I just thought I would post in case it's reassuring for you - I was 5 months pregnant when my eldest child came down with chicken pox. I'd slept in bed with him for two nights before the spots came out so couldn't have been much more exposed! I did have it as a child.
I was fine, and in fact to this day I wonder if the exposure has given my youngest some kind of immunity as he has escaped four different bouts of it, each time having played in close proximity with the children who got it.

Do mention it to your midwife though.

I’m a teacher also and there is currently a massive outbreak of chickenpox at my school! I asked the midwife today and she said I’m fine because I’ve had it as a child, if that helps 🙂

They can do a blood test if you're not sure (your GP can sort) however if you're confident you've had chicken pox you'll be fine - midwife won't be worried.

So long as you’ve had it as a child it’s nothing to worry about, most people have had it x
