Williams Syndrome

Hi all, I have recently found out I am pregnant.

My partner and myself are both healthy. On his side of the family there is william's syndrome being his brother who suffers with it. I have spoken to my parents in law who have said it is not hereditary and cannot be passed on, it was an isolated incident but there is always that thought in the back of my mind.

He has a sister who has 2 children who have not inherited the condition. Unfortunately it cannot be detected in the womb.

Thanks if I can have any thoughts on this.

Have you spoken to a genetic specialist or a doctor about this? Bit outside the scope of us on MN!

A quick Google does seem to suggest it is not passed on, and in the rare familial case, to direct children only. Please speak to someone more qualified about it otherwise you'll worry.

Thanks for your response @Flederjo it was more just to get an opinion than medical advice really. I've spoken to the hospital who have informed me that likely it is not hereditary and can only be passed down by a parent who has the condition which my partner's parents don't just his brother.

What do you mean, opinions?

It's not really an opinion subject, it's science!

@cdba88 but I don't know the 'science' of it that's why I'm asking if anyone else knows.

You do know the science of it as the drs have told you it can't be passed down in this scenario...?

Pre-natal testing is possible but usually only offered to people with Williams syndrome or who already have a child with it.

Why? You know the science. You've been told it by multiple sources now.
