Hi,
So I have GBS and have been literally so scared to do anything sexually.
I have tried to research all over google but can find anything on giving oral while pregnant with someone who may also potentially have GBS too. Can GBS cross to the baby this way? Or am I just be really stupid. Literally anxious about everything (currently waiting for help)

GBS

Hey!
No, I’m asking about Group B Strep
I know it can effect baby through labour and child birth

Ah!! I was a bit confused since what I posted is auto-immmune!

Haven't you had it treated with antibiotics?

AnxiousMummyx · 05/06/2022 12:11

No, antibiotics won’t be given until labour. Haven’t really been given a lot of info from midwife apart from when I’ll be given antibiotics

I had it when pregnant with my 4 month old. It never occurred to me not to do these things - it only passes to the baby during natural childbirth, as far as I'm aware. And then it's not that likely (but they give you antibiotics usually, just in case). My labour was so quick that they didn't have time to give me any before baby was born. Instead, they monitored him regularly for 24 hours after birth. It never spread to him.

I had it with my first but literally refused to do anything sexual so didn’t have these worries and had the antibiotics during labour which DC was absolutely fine.
But now with my worrying mind and having done things this time, it’s like could I have just given it to my baby orally 🤦🏼‍♀️.
I was only informed that it could be passed through vaginal birth but I literally can’t find a lot on what I’m worrying about so just wondering if it’s stupid or just not researched. Midwife hasn’t really told me a lot last time or this time so pretty much clueless

Really confused by what your question is, but I think your asking if it can be transmitted during oral sex?

GBS isn't a sexually transmitted disease, it's a bacteria that a lot of women have (1 in 4 I think) that goes unnoticed the majority of the time because it doesn't really cause any symptoms. I'm not an expert but I'd be surprised if it can live in the mouth as the ecosystems aren't the same.

I follow a GBS charity on FB (also GBS +) and if there were concerns about women with GBS kissing their babies I'm sure this would be raised. You should have got a pamphlet from the charity, they might have a FAQ page?

Also to add you don't have to avoid having vaginal sex because you have GBS, sounds like you should have a chat with your midwife! I know they can be a bit dismissive about it as it's not even routinely tested for and although they take precautions when they know your positive, there are probably loads of women who delivery every day who are GBS and don't even know!

I mean can it be transmitted to the fetus while giving oral sex as I the bacteria lives in and around the vagina and obviously these fluids will be in contact with salvia which is why I’m just concerned as to whether is can reach the fetus via this way. Wasn’t sure if it could cross the placenta via this way.

No I wasn’t given anything, just had a phone call after a swab that I had taken a few days before they said about the antibiotics and that was pretty much it.

But I have looked at the GBS website and it doesn’t say anything that I can see.

You don't need to worry at all, it can't pass to the baby in the way you're describing!

As other posters have said, there's a risk the baby would catch it during a vaginal birth and that's why antibiotics are given in labour if you're positive, but that's it.
