Private GP / NHS birth?

Hi everyone

We are considering starting to try for a baby but are slightly confused as to how the NHS vs private system works for us in terms of medical care.

We are lucky that as part of my work compensation package we get free access to a private GP - the prescriptions are slightly more expensive but appointments are easy to get and it’s located in my work building to popping down is super easy and as a result, I haven’t had to use my NHS GP for years.

We can’t afford to have private care for the whole pregnancy/birth and would be looking to go to a NHS hospital - does this mean I need to have all my pre-birth appointments with a NHS GP or can I continue to see the private one at work? Are there advantages/disadvantages to this?

many thanks!

You don't need to see a GP at all during pregnancy. All your appointments are with a midwife generally. You can still use your private GP if you need to see a GP - I continued to see my private rheumatologist during pregnancy for example - but all my antenatal care was arranged via the NHS hospital.
