Rubella outbreak in my area - very worried

It has just been revealed in the news that 4 babies in my area (Northern Beach of Sydney)have rubella. They are all under 12mths and so had not had the MMR. My Rubella immunity is low - I guess as I am 38 and was probably vaccinated when I was 13. I know I can't be vaccinated now (21 weeks pregnant) but what can I do to make sure I don't come into contact with it? I have a 2 and 5 year old who have both been vaccinated and I need to take them to childcare/school and other activities. Any words of advice would be great.

I think if you have had the vaccine in your teens you are immune for life. i asked as a child got slapped cheek in my school when i taught when i was pregnant as i was told i was immune.

The highest risk to the unborn child is in the first three months of pregnany when the organs etc are developing. As you are well into the second trimester, your baby is relatively safe.

I would imagine that as long as you stay away from small babies your risk of catching it would be low. So tiny risk of catching it times tiny risk of any serious effects equals minute rik of any problem occurring.

Egypt - Rubella immunity is definitely not for life. Althought the info re slapped cheek is correct. I was tested when I fell pregnant, which is routine to find that my immunity had worn off a lot. It is the same for our children with the MMR - to maintain immunity they would need a booster later in life.

Tissy - I think you are right - it is just a question of to what lengths I need to go to avoid babies during the remainder of my 2nd trimester.

The school that DS1 is enrolled in is anti-vaccinations so there will probably be plenty of unprotected kids there, which hasn't bothered me thus far as my children are vaccinated, but on this issue of Rubella ...
