Last night I felt like I was getting what felt like hay fever. Iv never had it before but I went to visit my mum and was sneezing and my nose was itching like crazy and my eyes and throat and my mum said she has hay fever it’s what it sounds like. She offered me one of her antihistamine but the box said not to take while pregnant. So it was getting late when I went 10pm and I went to the midnight pharmacy on my way home and explained it my pregnant and have hay fever they said they can’t give me any at all it has to be prescribed by a gp. So it’s the weekend and Iv woken up this morning and all my symptoms are immense and it’s only 7am!
does anyone here in the U.K. been prescribed antihistamines from their gp and can tell me the brand please so I can buy some that are the same so I know they are safe. Or does anyone know another way I can get some prescribed to me on the weekend?

Check out this info from the NHS: www.nhs.uk/conditions/antihistamines/

Loratadine is usually recommended in pregnancy

I've just been told by my obstetric consultant that Piriton is believed to be safe in pregnancy and that it's "used a lot" (in pregnancy). I've bought some as I was really struggling with hay fever a few days ago but I haven't taken any yet.

The best thing to do is to speak to your GP who can advise you on what may be safest.

The World Health Organisation also has a list of medicines for everything including hay fever in their website that tells you which ones are considered safe to use in pregnancy.

@Novella12 I actually have some Loratadine in my house and it says on the back not to take. It’s such confusing information and I can’t speak to a gp until Monday

the BUMPS website is a brilliant resource this is their advice about hayfever. I’d start with Opticrom eye drops and a steroid nasal spray eg flixonase and see if they help over the weekend.

Can you call 111 and get some advice? Would be useful I think.

Get a red light probe from the pharmacist.

Another nasal spray to consider is Becodefence, it's drug free and specifically says it's suitable for pregnant women. I've used it and found it very effective, although it stings a little when your first use it. Is available in most supermarkets.

Here's some more info Becodefence

Hope you get it sorted!

I don't think any OTC hay fever meds have been tested on pregnant women and therefore they can't categorically say they are safe but I took piriton regularly through my pregnancy on the advice of my GP. I just had to get DH to buy it as they won't sell it to you if you're pregnant. Alternatively, you can get your GP to give it to you in prescription but it's cheaper to buy it yourself.

I would just phone the gp and say you just want to know what antihistamine you can use. You probably don't need an appointment for it. Pretty much medication says not to take if pregnant so it's hard to distinguish what's safe from what isn't!
