Worried about growth scan - possible GD?

I had a growth scan on Wednesday at 26+6 weeks.

Baby's abdominal circumference was on the 96th percentile which I know can be indicative of gestational diabetes.

Just to add to my worry, baby's estimated current weight is 2lb 8oz. I know it's only an estimate but my pregnancy apps all say babies are around 1lb 9oz at 27 weeks. So I guess he could be very big for his gestation.

I've got a glucose tolerance test on the 6th June.

My obstetric consultant told me not to worry and said if I do have GD it won't affect my baby. I am not in the slightest bit pacified by that and fear a medical condition could already be affecting my unborn child.

Can anyone please advise?

I wouldn’t worry yet at my 20 week scan my babies AC measurement was over 97th centile it was off the chart and they was asking about GD tests. I had my GD test at 28 weeks and consultant said my fasting blood sugar levels were perfect and then 2 weeks later at a growth scan baby was measuring just above 50th centile and has done since am due to have c section on Thursday at 39 weeks and they think he will be around 8lb 8oz so not massive but not tiny. The growth scans have a reputation of being very wrong.

I had GD with my third. Controlled with diet. Baby was fine -7lb 2 born at 39+1. If you do have it, it can be managed 👍

Thank you both. I'm not panicking yet but I am concerned. I'll do a bit of reading on GD in order to give me some ideas about what might happen if I do have GD, however I don't want to stress myself out when it might not be necessary. I know the estimated weights aren't always very accurate and can in fact be way off the mark. I'm hoping that's the case here - I'd quite like to give birth to a baby and not a teenager!

A great place for info on GD is the Gestational diabetes UK website (and Facebook group)

If it is GD it6s good to identify it early as there's lots you can do to control it, from diet to medication.

I second @DuneFan. If you do have it, the Facebook page is a great resource (ignore NHS advice as this is for people with T2 diabetes and the tolerance for GD is much lower)

I was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks. Was lucky enough to control it through diet alone. Normalised my pregnancy, allowed to go to 41 weeks and went into spontaneous labour the day I was due to be induced. DS born 7lb 7oz.

If you think you may have it, start adjusting your diet now. Essentially elimate sugar as much as you can, reduce carbs (palm sized amount on the plate, rest should be veg and protein), no more than 1 slice of bread and 2 portions of fruit a day. 2 brisk walks of at least 15 minutes a day if you are not exercising regularly. This was the advice I had and controlled my GD with diet. My baby always measured off the scales huge, yet when he was born was only 8lbs 8oz so really not that massive. I think the scans aren't always that accurate.
