I'm 23 weeks pregnant.

My midwife has offerred to refer me to a MH midwife as my mum ( unexpectedly), died 2 and a half weeks ago following a short hospital admission.

I'm really worried about being referred , and this highlighting or causing unwanted involvement/ attention from SS. The appointment is on Friday.

I am back to work on Monday, ( I have been given three weeks off due to the bereament), and am worried it could be stressful and anxiety inducing before going back to work.

Hi Op, so sorry for your loss. I can understand your fear, I also felt these feelings and suspicions were heightened in pregnancy. Just want to reassure you with my experience.

Perinatal psychiatry referral would be so you have access to meds quickly and easily should the need arise. Perinatal midwives don't deal with meds. I was offered such a referral and accepted it, just in case my MH deteriorated after the birth- I wanted access to experts who could give me suitable meds. I didn't need it in the end and never opted to see a psychiatrist. It would be your choice.

My experience was really positive of the perinatal care... they were really good advocates for me and my needs and was just an extra layer of support.

What kind of support could be offerred ?

I saw a mental health midwife during my second pregnancy as id had mental health problems after the birth of my first. She then referred me to the perinatal mental health team. I had a community psychiatric nurse who visited me regularly. She also arranged for us to stay under the care of the midwife longer than usual after the birth. And got the HV to actually get off her arse and see me.

There was no question of my baby being taken away. If I’d needed (I didn’t) my baby and I could have gone to the mother & baby unit. I visited for a Xmas party (yes really) and it wasn’t such a terrible place. Obviously better not to need it but if you do need that help then it’s good that it’s there.

I'm so sorry very for the loss of your mum. It’s good the mental health team are looking out for you xx
