have you drunk loads odf water? you are probably also lacking magnesium, have some dried apricots. i suffer from migraines and they are horrible aren't they

Mumblesmummy · 12/01/2008 11:17

When I had this earlier in pregnancy, the hospital told me to take co codamol 4 times a day to ease it. I drank lots of water and tried to lay down lots, too. It went after 6 days. If you've still got it by Monday/Tuesday, you'd probably be best going to the doctors.

I've been having 'perfectly clear apple water' and I must have been through 8 2 litre bottles in 4 days! However, i've got a water infection now so I'm unsure on whether it should be flavoured or not?

Try not to read too much scary stuff on the net. My DP goes mad when I do and scare myself. The doctors told me that pregnant women are prone to headaches, but to go back if it got worse or if it just wouldn't go away. It's usually an indication of high BP too, so they'll check that for you. If it goes away with co-codamol, it's probably not too worrying, however, co-codamol does cause constipation, be warned!!

rdk · 12/01/2008 11:58

so ur 100% sure i can take co-codamol whilst pg,its worth a try , gonna go and raid the cupboard now for some

I had to go into hospital a few times when pregnant through migraines - I get it all and look like I have had a storke - go and see the doctor they will prescribe you something and make sure your hands aren't cold or the back of your neck - if they are warm them up as this sometimes helps me.

rdk · 12/01/2008 12:10

thanks twinkle, my hands and neck are warm at moment but thats good to know in case i do go cold . im going to try some co codamol and see what happens but not sure how many i should have

I had to take 2 every 6 hours, and I got them prescribed from the antenatal ward. Check the packet though. You can take paracetamol or cocodamol but you CAN NOT EVER take ibuprofen whilst you're pregnant.

rdk · 12/01/2008 12:20

thanks mumblesmummy, hopefully these will help, will let u know later on xx

You can definitely take co-codamol, codeine is safe is pregnancy but it can cause headaches if taken too often.

However, you should call your out-of-hours doctors now, any headache lasting more than (I think) 2 days, you must go and get your blood pressure checked.

I have had to go a few times to get mine checked (am currently 28weeks).

LiegeAndLief · 12/01/2008 19:57

Oh sod it just wrote quite a long message and lost it - no time to repeat but I agree with VictorianSqualor. Get your bp checked asap. It may well not be pre-eclampsia but it is always best to be sure. Good luck!

3littlefrogs · 12/01/2008 20:05

Another vote for the BP check asap. And a urine test.Do you have pain above your stomach? Like heartburn or bad indigestion?
Visual disturbances like spots or flashing lights together with headache and pain as I have mentioned can be signs of pre-eclampsia and should not be ignored.

VictorianSqualor · 12/01/2008 20:09

Hopefully you'll get there and theyll say your BP is fine, they have done with me but pre-eclampsia can be fatal so they would much prefer to spend a few minutes checking your bp than missing the diagnosis.
So we aren't trying to scare you, just emphasise that with headaches in pregnancy, especially severe and long lasting ones you are best to err on the side of caution.

BorgLady · 14/01/2008 10:52

I've had nasty migraines too, and someone on here told me that a cup of very strong coffee can help. I tried it last week and it did the trick for me.

Thanks to whoever suggested that, saved me hours of pain!

gillythekid · 14/01/2008 13:54

hello rdk I have lived with migraine for years and have had only one attack since being pregnant. Tablets containing codiene can make migraine worse as they have a withdrawal that can cause tension headache thus making migraine worse. After the last 5 day attack I started seeing a cranio sacral therapist who has taught me to release the tension at the occipital bone at the back of the head and to calm the stomach. It's worked wonders and has averted 2 attacks this month. I can't recommend this therapy highly enough as I've tried all the drugs/therapies over the years with little or no effect. I empathise fully as I wanted to hack my own head off last time after 3 days!

rdk · 14/01/2008 14:00

sorry didnt get bac to u lovely ladies but im ok now after 4 days is gone

rdk · 14/01/2008 14:02

i took co-codamol and went to buy some more and the guy in boots said u cant take them in pregnancy and got out this little book to read up more,.

VictorianSqualor · 14/01/2008 16:40

rdk, that's what they told me in sainsburys, but my midwife had told em specifically to take those, so I argued, I told them my doctor had told me to take them and that they are actually safe in pregnancy.
I got my tablets
If you're worried, call your midwife, I'm sure she'll give you the ok to take them, then you'll feel happier taking them.
FWIW, I have had hospital appointments with many doctors/midwives and even a professor who have all asked every little detail of my pg, they have all asked what I took to ease my headaches and been totally fine with co-codamol.
It is purely for the pharmacists safety if someone complains that they took them on their go ahead.
