Elective C section process / reasoning

Hi,

I’m 31 weeks pregnant and am hoping to speak to my midwife at my 32 week appointment about an elective c section for my first baby.

My mum unfortunately had a stillbirth at 40 weeks and then went on to deliver future babies at 37 weeks via c section. I have now built the this up in my head so much that I think I’m going to undergo the same thing with my first, and it’s causing me so much upset and anxiety that I feel like a c section is the only way I can safely give birth.

I have done all the research around natural birth v c section, watched various antenatal videos and I also work as a PA within the nursing department at the hospital I will give birth in, so have spoken with maternity staff and gained opinions/safety statistics.

I suppose my questions are

  • Is the 32 weeks appointment the right time to bring this up, and will I be referred to a consultant?

  • Am I going to have a fight on my hands? I have no medical reason other than baby is currently measuring quite big (though have been told this usually plateaus)

Thanks all :)

I was fully expecting a fight to get a c-section, but it was pleasantly smooth sailing once I spoke to the consultant. They explained that it's my body, and my choice. I think after all the controversy surrounding the "natural birth quotas", some trusts are much more open and understanding of it. Good luck, I'm sure you'll be fine!
