Gestational diabetes test

Hi! I'm being checked for gestational diabetes as my DD is growing super fast. My urine tests haven't indicated any sugar or anything, would this have picked up any indication of gestational diabetes?

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!

I had gestational diabetes, probably steroid induced in my case. Urine tests were always fine. Best advice is not to panic until you have a result from the blood tests. Then start or find a thread for advice if necessary.

I ended up on insulin - not fun but ultimately fine. The biggest gripe I had was that many medical practitioners treated the issue/numbers rather than the patient (s) in front of them. I had to advocate quite loudly at times. Eg I’m my case I kept getting discussions on risk for big babies when DS was on the 50th centile for all scans (7lb 6oz at birth) and I’d previously delivered DD at 9lb 2oz!

Obviously different for you but point is you might need to ensure they focus on your specific case whatever your diagnosis. Good luck.

Sometimes glucose in urine can be the first sign of GD but not always. They are doing the right thing to test if you are measuring large and if the test is positive you will be referred for the correct care. Until you have a diagnosis I would try and put it out of your mind. Risk factors for GD are bmi >30, family history, previous large baby (over 4.5kg in our trust) and ethnicity.

Thank you so much for your replies! It all came out of the blue so I'm trying not to panic. My last appointment she was measuring absolutely fine and then 3 weeks later she's grown 7cm?! I knew my bump had grown but didn't realise how big she has gotten. No family history or drastic weight issues so crossing my fingers for an all clear test

I have GD and my urine tests have never shown any sugar despite eating quite a lot of sugary snacks before getting diagnosed. Many people have no symptoms at all. Hope your test comes back negative but if it doesn't at least you can manage it for the sake of your baby.

As op say, urine sugars are not always a good indicator.

I'm a veteran GDer. Usual to get Dx at about 28 weeks unless something else is flagging it up. A large baby can be an indication, but scans by this point can be notoriously inaccurate so best to test. Ultimately if it's mild it's easily managed with diet, but it is a progressive condition which tends to get worse as you go and is then worse in subsequent pregnancies. Medication can seem scary but if you and baby need it, it's actually not such a big deal. By the end of my last pregnancy I was injecting 6x a day and on metformin but honestly it was fine. The pens are amazing with a hair fine needle you don't even feel.

I'd try and forget it til after your GTT (take a book or fully charged phone - you'll have to sit on your bum and not move around for 2h as that affects results and it's SO boring!) and then if you are GD, come start a thread or come back to this one!

Thanks so much. I am so nervous about it, can't stop blaming myself that I've done something to cause it

Please don't worry. My friend had GD, she had her baby a month ago and they're both fine. I've got the test next week because my mum is occasionally diabetic (long story!) so that puts me in the at risk group apparently.

trrk · 17/05/2022 17:59

Even if you are positive it's very unlikely that anything you have done has caused it. It is hormonal for most people. Despite eating quite a lot of sugary food between meals (really got into baking while working from home) in my case my Dad has type 2 diabetes and it's likely I would have got it anyway. Even after dropping the sugar I was still getting high blood glucose readings from relatively healthy normal meals and am now on metformin which is mostly working.

RinklyRomaine · 17/05/2022 19:59

It's a placental issue. There are risk factors but you cannot cause it. Forget that. I cried like a baby with my first diagnosis but it's not necessary. The diabetes was gone within a week of giving birth. Following pregnancy I had symptoms within a week of bfp despite having had a clear hba1c not long before. I was on metformin by 7 weeks! I didn't cause it, it just happened.

My results came back fine! Very happy about that. I am just carrying a very long baby and they mentioned potentially inducing me at 37 weeks if there is continued large growth. Thank you for all your replies on here, it definitely made me feel much calmer ❤️

Great news. Hopefully you can now relax for the rest of your pregnancy.
