How many newborn clothes to buy?

I'm a FTM and feeling a bit clueless about what I need to buy for a baby arriving in early July. I'll buy most stuff in the 0-3 sizes initially but how many newborn sized clothes do we need? I've heard some babies grow out of them quickly so you don't need many? Do we need anything in the newborn size other than say some long sleeve sleep suits and short sleeve vests?

My baby used newborn and first size for ages! We didn’t use 0-3 until she was almost 3 months so entirely depends on your baby. Mine was 6lb 10.5 so not really tiny.
For the sake of a few £ I’d get a couple of packs of babygrows in newborn unless you measure very big.

I much preferred zip babygrows, when you just want to get back to sleep those precious seconds count!

I found nearly all gifts were 0-3 months and he has tons of lovely stuff that size, so you might not want to buy that size yourself after all.

Also I found both new borns very clean so a couple of sleepsuits did just fine. I didn't get to laundry casualties until a few weeks later, so didn't need stacks of early size.

None newborn

1month - a few sleepsuits and vests
0-3month - 10 sleepsuits and vests. 2 cardigans. Couple basic leggings. Socks.

On hot days you might just put baby in short sleeve vest and socks, or add leggings first thing and take off once warm. Cooler than full sleepsuit sometimes

We brought nothing in newborn at first, and had about 8 sleepsuits in 0-3. My sister's kids went straight into 0-3 and she said there was no point in bothering with small sizes. We were in the midst of a house renovation and living at my mum's so I was happy to take this advice.
Our first was 8lbs 8 and in hindsight, we'd have been fine with just 0-3. But in my FTM state of heightened anxiety, I was worried about him flopping the sleeves over his face whilst I was sleeping 🙄so we brought a few packs of "first size" from Asda, which then did both my kids as my second was much smaller at 7lbs 5.
In hindsight, I wouldn't have bothered, but it helped at the time. Asda is (or was, 4 years ago) brilliant for quality as we passed all ours on looking as good as new after 2 kids.

I bought a few up to 1 month sleep suits from sainsburys and just used 0-3 month short sleeve body suits under them. My DS was predicted to be average sized from his growth scans but was 9lb 13oz when he was born so would never have fitted in newborn clothes anyway. Zipper sleepsuits are good however if the sleep suit is slightly too big I found that the zip bunched up under his chin so poppers looked more comfortable and weren’t too much of a hassle
