Would I be allowed a re-scan?

I’ve had spotting all the way through this pregnancy so far, there’s never been any physical examination, I’ve always been told when I phone up that it can be normal and to just monitor it. I had a red period like bleed at 7 weeks and then one at 19 weeks on holiday last week. Last week it was red fresh bleeding with clots and it terrified me. This is my second pregnancy and I didn’t have this with DC1.

Anyway, at my 20 week scan today I mentioned the bleeding to the sonographer so she checked it first. She said the cervix was short and that the placenta was low and partially blocking the cervix. She said there should be a 2cm gap minimum and mine was only measuring 1.2cm, and that a further scan would be needed at 32 weeks to check that it’s moved. Obviously I don’t want there to be a problem but in a way I was relieved that I had some explanation for the bleeding because she said it’s likely that was the reason for it. She went through the rest of the scan and measurements and then went back to the cervix and she said that now my bladder had filled up my cervix was clear and placenta was no longer low so no rescan needed?! I queried it and said how can that change just from having a full bladder and she said “I don’t know, it’s a bit bizarre”.

Has anyone had any experience of this? How can my cervix be partially blocked by the placenta when my bladder is empty and then when it’s full it’s suddenly fine? It’s really playing on my mind, if I hadn’t have had the bleeding then I wouldn’t question it but it seems really odd to me. Would I be allowed a second opinion? There was both a trainee and senior sonographer at the scan today. I am consultant led due to having pre-eclampsia previously but I haven’t even got another appointment scheduled with them yet.

Hi OP,

At my 20 week scan last week the sonographer said my placenta was just 2cm away from the cervix, I had also had on episode of bleeding, and she explained it may be due to the placenta (especially at this point) having been closer to the cervix. She did say she expected it to move as the pregnancy progressed, but you never know.

I've got scans scheduled later on anyway as my first was born on the 8th centile at 41+5 (and there were other issues) and she assured me they'd re-check again at the next scan.

I really don't think there's any harm asking to be re-assessed in the matter.

Hope all goes well!

@Moonshine160 I would absolutely ask for a rescan and for clarification as to how the placenta suddenly "moved". Placenta previa can be serious and it's worth getting checked again and then regularly.
