Trouble sleeping

At only 24 weeks with my first py I'm having probs with my sleep. I start off determined to rest on my side and have tried a range of cushions to help but I always wake up on my back (my natural sleeping position) and the cushion is either at the bottom of the bed or has fallen out of the bed all together! I must be a restless sleeper! This is already meaning that I can wake up feeling a bit achy. Anyone else had a similar problem and does anyone know if it could cause problems in the third trimester if I carry on sleeping on my back?

Hi EmmyJo, I have had problems like this too and went to see a physio about it. She gave me some stretches for tight hip muscles (which does make sleeping on my side easier)and said that if I do find myself sleeping on my back, as long as I don't feel dizzy or breathless it is ok. You might want to ask your midwife about it, but that's the advice I'm taking!

I'm 22 weeks and also a bit restless already at night.
My Dad has a bad back and was advised not to sleep on his back and his physio said if you put a pillow between your knees when you go to bed, for some reason you stay in same position all night. He swears by it, says he is always in the same place in the morning. May be worth a try?

Re sleeping on your back, my midwife was saying that as long as you don't lie completely flat (which would mean without pillows) and you feel comfortable then apparently it's all okay.

Hiya,

I am 12 weeks pregnant and am having trouble sleeping - at all.

Did anyone else go through this.

I'm also having trouble finding a comfortable position to sleep in (24 weeks as well). I natually sleep on my tummy - and often wake up to find that's what I am doing - and in a bit of pain! Have tried the going to sleep on my side with a cushion between my legs, but find myself wanting to turn over because my side is getting sore. All I keep thinking is that it really isn't that much longer so trying to grin and bear it..

Hi, I have been having trouble sleeping too - I'm 34 weeks now.

For me there have been various factors along the way, starting in the 1st trimester:

Mind racing - esp 1st/2nd trimester
Heartburn - esp 3rd trimester
Back / side pain - all the way through
Needing the loo every 2 hours - esp 1st and 3rd trimesters

Gaviscon helps the heartburn
Pregnancy pilates has been brilliant for the mind racing/ back pain side of things (prob quite similar to tyaca's pregnancy yoga)
But I've not found anything that helps with the need to go to the loo! tbh as long as I can get straight back off to sleep afterwards I don't mind it too much.

im 30 weeks and pregnancy has been stress free, but now i am waking up at 3am most nights and struggle to get back to sleep, i usually come downstairs for a bit and drink some milk....my mind races, i'm still working so its even harder because i feel knackered the next day..any sleep tips most welcome!!..think my hubby loves it tho having the bed to himself for a few hours!! ha ha...:)

I keep waking up for all sorts of reasons (39 weeks now) & can't always go back to sleep. I downloaded a hpynobirthing MP3 onto my phone a few weeks ago & listen to that when I'm having trouble nodding off - i do the breathing & focusing etc - works everytime!

I feel your pain EmmyJo I'm 28 weeks and suffering too! I'm going to try the pillow between the legs trick Mum2b2BabyRoo, I always end up on my back with a horribly achy bump. My midwife suggested a pregnancy girdle which arrived yesterday so I'll give that a go tonight. DP is so patient, I've been kicking and shoving him for the past week, trying to get his snoring face away from me! Keep getting horribly achy hips and at least three trips to the loo every night. Still working and no-one I work with has a had a baby...they just don't understand! Especially hard with a crappy boss who thinks her problems are worse than anyone elses....anyway I digress! I hope you feel better soon and find something that helps. Tell us if you do!

I got a long pregnancy pillow and I still end up sleeping on my back. I must actually pick the entire thing up as its always neatly placed by the side of the bed when I get up. Haha. Midwife said as long as it doesn't hurt and if you do wake up then try to go back to sleep on your side.
Nothing I can do about it though. I tried pillows and cushions at first, then went to the big pillow, now just go to sleep on my side
