Tell me your growth scan accuracy stories please! Baby measuring big!

I’m 39w+3d and growth scans are showing my baby to be on the 97th percentile and estimate its current weight to be just over 9lb. I’ve seen a couple of Doctors and they are recommending that I am induced before I reach full term next week and have even offered me an elective section because of the baby’s size.

My first baby was 6lb 14oz (although was 5 days early) and I know bump size isn’t everything but if anything I am smaller with this baby than I was with her. I’m not uncomfortable and just don’t feel like I’m carrying a 9lb baby. To confuse things even more I had a private scan at 39w which measured me to be bang on my due date and baby to be weighing 7lb 7oz - the NHS doctors are adamant that this is wrong.

Can you tell me your experiences of growth scans and how accurate/inaccurate they were? I would desperately like to avoid intervention but it’s so hard when you have Doctors advising otherwise!

I should add that the head and leg measurements are on the 50th percentile. It’s the belly that is measuring very large which is bumping the weight up! Which is why they were concerned about gestational diabetes but I’ve been tested twice and both times it was negative. I read that the belly measurement is the hardest to get accurate which is making me doubt it even more!

Had the exact same with my dd, her belly was always measuring larger and had gd tests too. She was quite curled up in my stomach so I think they were just off in those measurements

This is exactly what I think is happening with me - it’s all scrunched up in there which is distorting the belly size. If all the measurements were big then it would be a different story but something just doesn’t feel right.

So an update! I’ve been having mild but pretty regular surges since about 5am this morning. Saw my midwife who did the sweep and said I am 3cm dilated and said it’s all looking very promising down there!

I’ve been out for a long walk to try and keep the contractions going so fingers crossed it all happens naturally 😬

Ah good luck @5star123 that sounds really positive!

Let us know how you get on!

annlee3817 · 07/05/2022 14:38

Scan on due date, measuring 7lbs 6oz, born give days later and was 7lbs 10oz.

My friend was told on hers that she was having a 10lber and he was born after his due date at just under 8lbs

annlee3817 · 07/05/2022 14:38

Five days later not give

Afolnerd · 07/05/2022 14:51

I have had 4 kids and lots of growth scans with 3 of them and in my experience they are pointless and very inaccurate.
baby number 2 was apparently 5lb 6oz 3 weeks before I had her. Born at 4lb 4oz
Scans with the others were well out too.

Bumply · 07/05/2022 17:37

DS2 was scanning as large. Larger than ds1 who was 8lb 10.
Got checked for gestational diabetes, but that wasn't the cause.
I was nearly induced on due date as had high bp, but after a night in hospital my bp was back to normal.
In the end I was induced a week overdue and he was born normally despite the Drs putting their head round the door periodically as they were convinced he'd need a C-section.
He was 10lb 7

egrundy1234 · 07/05/2022 20:33

I was told my twins were pretty much the same size. One was 5lbs 4oz, the other 6lbs 6oz so...

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 07/05/2022 21:23

I cannot see how measuring a woman’s bump can be any accurate measurement at all as every woman’s body is so different.

ijustcouldntthinkofausername · 07/05/2022 21:31

I always measured 91st centile and was told baby would be at least 8lb which scared me as I have such a tiny frame.
I was induced 3 days before due date and he was a tiny 6lbs 9oz.

I have spoken with a lot of people who this happened to do don't panic OP.
They CAN get it wrong, often.

They told me that my son was approximately 7lb 6oz he was born two days later and was 9lb 11oz 🤷‍♀️

FTMworrier · 07/05/2022 21:39

I had a growth scan at 36 weeks as all of a sudden my bump was off the scale. Baby measured normally, I just had some excess fluid. Baby arrived 5 days early at 9lb 8oz and back to back 🫣

N0va · 07/05/2022 21:48

38 weeks DC was estimated at 6lb 4, 42 weeks came and he arrived at 10lb 8 DaffodilSmile

This was late last year

I had to have loads of extra scans near the end due to growth and they were really worried, then he flipped breech and I was all set to have an ECV and he went back again!

He was just long - 54cm and his legs seemed to go on forever, he didn't weigh that much, only 20g more than my previous baby. 3400g ish. However I think psychologically it did a number on me because I remember when crowning thinking his head must be the biggest head in the world. It is not especially big Grin

InTheNightWeWillWish · 07/05/2022 22:00

DD was predicted to be between 9 and 10lb. Every scan had her on the 98th percentile. I was told some of this was because she was a long baby and they commenting in surprise that she was so long (ignoring that DH is 6’ 2” so not that surprising). They also kept telling me how big her head would be, at one stage her head was off the charts. Obviously when you’re due to have a baby you need to constantly be told that you have some giant headed baby that isn’t going to fit Hmm

DD was 7lb 12. She was two weeks early but my last scan at 36 weeks estimated she was 7lb something then. Her head was a normal size and didn’t get stuck. She was (still is) long, so at least they got that right.

5star123 · 08/05/2022 02:50

Our baby boy was born last night (39+4) at a healthy 8lb 4oz and on the 74th percentile 😍So the NHS growth scan I had the day before was a bit of an overestimate and the private one at 39w was an underestimate!

@5star123 congratulations! Flowers

justmewithmylifetoday · 08/05/2022 04:28

DD1- predicted under 6lbs. Born 6lbs 2oz (5th percentile)

DS2- predicted as similar weight to DD1- Born 7lbs (25th Centile)

Both born C-section same at 38+6 and 39w.

I had SO many growth scans in both pregnancies and DD1 was classed as IUGR at somepoint. Once I got to DD2 who was at the bottom of the growth chart during growth scans just like DD1 it was a bit more relaxed as they agreed I probably just have smaller babies.

I think it's equally as 'normal' for people to naturally have bigger babies.

I wouldn't worry op. 😌

justmewithmylifetoday · 08/05/2022 04:29

Just seen you've had baby boy OP congratulations!! Sounds pretty perfect to me 😊

tuliplover · 08/05/2022 05:04

They said mine were big and I had sections planned for 38 weeks both times. First arrived just before 37 weeks (my waters broke) weighing 4.65kg, second one was 4.48. I don't recall them predicting an actual weight but they were certainly right that they were big!

marriedthegambler · 08/05/2022 05:16

I had growth scans 32/34/36 weeks. Baby growing off the scale and rapid growth rate. Tested for gdd. Told 10lb baby. I opted for a c-section at 37 weeks. Baby was 7lb 7.

GraceL365 · 08/05/2022 05:22

I had a couple of growth scans, once because baby was measuring big with the tape measure and once because he was measuring small. Scans showed him to be perfectly fine for size and within ‘normal range’ but I was told he was on the bigger side. He was 9lbs 11oz when born. Growth scans aren’t always the most accurate though…

BurningBenches · 08/05/2022 09:09

Ah congratulations @5star123 how lovely xxx
