4 POSITIVE pregnancy tests…I’m not pregnant?!

yup. 4 pregnancy tests… yet apparently I’m not pregnant?!

Having a rollercoaster of a few days and honestly hoping someone has had a similar experience that can advise?

went for a long awaited (& saved up for) tummy tuck on Tuesday; compression stockings and hospital gown on, totally ready to go! For the nurse to tell me the urine sample I’d given had produced two positive pregnancy tests.

I’ve had a copper coil ‘in’ pretty much since my youngest (3 this month) was born.

i cried a lot. They couldn’t perform the surgery and I was sent home.

i’ve had some minor spotting, cramps and breast tenderness - thinking my period was starting as it was due now, 2 days ago.

Never assumed my coil could have failed.

explained this to GP

Light bleeding, positive results and copper coil. He got me a scan appointment for two days later.

took another two tests at home one normal and one clear blue “how many weeks” one. And both positive and 2-3 weeks, apparently.

had the external and internal scan today and was told they COULDN’T find a baby? but cannot confirm either way…

however, they can see cysts on my ovaries?

apparently these can cause the HGV and missing period, breast pain and cramps?

anyone else had a positive result or know someone who has but ISN’T having a baby?

my GP/nurse seem baffled and are referring me to a gynaecologist - but, I’m sure that appointment won’t be for a week or two.

I feel so confused, I don’t know if I’m pregnant or now & feel like my body is playing a practical joke on me.

many thanks for listening to me vent!

Really you need to be at least 5 weeks to see anything on a scan.

Was it done internally?

I would wait it out and rescan in a few weeks time xx

Beachsidesunset · 05/05/2022 21:48

I wouldn't necessarily expect to see anything on a scan at 4/5 weeks. It's a waiting game. Could you ask for a blood test to check for rising hcg levels?

SockQueen · 05/05/2022 21:48

If it's still very early they might not be able to see the pregnancy on scan, whether it's in the uterus or ectopic. Have they offered to rescan you in a few weeks?

BattenburgDonkey · 05/05/2022 21:49

It’s too early to see anything on a scan with hcg levels producing a 2-3 week result. When is your rescan?

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 05/05/2022 21:49

I'm surprised the doctor/nurse seem baffled, because cysts which cause hcg levels to rise aren't that uncommon!

What dreadful timing for you though

jacksmannequin · 05/05/2022 21:50

Was there a gestational sac or yolk sac Visible ? Have they ruled out ectopic ?

Lisargh68 · 06/05/2022 08:46

@cookielove @SockQueen @BattenburgDonkey
Internal and external scan, yes. Not sure if there offering me another at this time.

@Beachsidesunset I haven’t been offered a blood test yet but, will ask when I speak to the GP today.

@jacksmannequin the gentleman who did the ultrasound gave me very limited information. Aside from saying he “can’t see anything besides cysts”, the only thing he did say was he “can’t say 100% if pregnant or not”
questions I asked were responded to with “I don’t know”. English wasn’t his first language so, I think he was possibly struggling to communicate with me.

@UnmentionedElephantDildo I think the doctor is just confused where to go from here, as nothing can be confirmed either way, what’s causing what - they can’t tell me what the next step forward is.

feeling pregnant and (potentially) not being is quite a strange phenomenon for me!

Why didn't they do a blood test to check for rising hcg levels?

I very much doubt he "couldn't communicate with you" because English is his second language rolls eyes

He will have been a sonographer NOT a gynaecologist or obstetrician and is therefore trained to read basic pregnancy scans not give medical advice for what sounds like an unusual scenario.

You would be in uproar if he gave you incorrect info so better he says he doesn't know which is truthful...

roadsweep · 06/05/2022 09:53

All I get from this is that you're pregnant but it's too early to see on a scan. Nothing baffling.

CanYouHearMeAtTheBack · 06/05/2022 09:58

Is your coil still in place? Agree with pp, it may be too early (if you are pg) to see on scan, so usual procedure would be 2 look tests 48h apart (I think?) to see if/how fast hgc levels are rising

CanYouHearMeAtTheBack · 06/05/2022 09:59

*blood tests

tomatoandherbs · 06/05/2022 10:01

They have found Cysts on our ovaries
this can often lead to raised HGV levels
i can’t understand why your go is baffled?

MuchTooTired · 06/05/2022 10:04

Could you afford to go for private hcg tests? Admittedly it was about 5 years ago, but mine costs around £45 each with the results back the same day. Could be worth calling some local fertility clinics.

Junebughustle · 06/05/2022 10:12

I would definitely ask for a blood test so they can measure hormones. I'd be wary it might mean ectopic pregnancy - I had this last month, positive pregnancy tests, sore boots, nothing in my uterus at scan. I hope that as PP suggest it's more likely because of cysts. Good luck OP.

Junebughustle · 06/05/2022 10:12

Sore boobs not boots!

Swayingpalmtrees · 06/05/2022 11:02

I have had this!

It is very important to get the cysts removed op. I had one growing in my tubes and it caused my levels to jump up as you describe, I don't want to worry you but if mine had been left, it would have burst my fallopian tube.

Get back in touch with the GP and ask for an immediate referral to have the cysts removed.

Swayingpalmtrees · 06/05/2022 11:03

The GP should not be confused, this is very straight forward!!

ALittleBitofVitriol · 06/05/2022 11:20

I had a scan at 4-5 weeks because I thought I was further along due to symptoms. They couldn't see anything.

The scan at 4 weeks later showed a baby and a strong heartbeat.

It's too early. Get a blood test for hcg levels. I highly doubt that 4 positive tests are wrong.

Lisargh68 · 06/05/2022 13:48

@carmenitapink don’t think I was being rude. He was a lovely man but, couldn’t remember the words ‘left’ or ‘right’ when asked which side the cysts were on and instead of speaking would point so the chaperone spoke for him when she understood… So, yes. I do believe he was was struggling to communicate.

@Swayingpalmtrees
thank you for that, I’ll defo push for more information & hopefully get someone to look at them properly. Did you by chance know if you had HCG levels that were showing on a pregnancy test?

@ALittleBitofVitriol yeah, I think the test I photographed saying “2-3weeks” is conception wise, not how doctors date it (meaning I think they date back from last period??) so if I am pregnant I’ll be at the 4-5week period too.

Blood tests for Monday and Wednesday to see if HCG levels are rising and go from there. It’s gonna feel like a lonngggg weekend!

tomatoandherbs · 06/05/2022 13:59

Op

why on earth is your GP “baffled”

have you perhaps interpreted this as such because you want to be pregnant?

because seem very straightforward to me. You have cysts. Cysts cause increased HGV. Hence the raised pregnancy test.

You have been referred because you have cysts

Frazzled2207 · 06/05/2022 14:02

Ah bless you no advice but I hope this gets resolved the uncertainty must be awful

GlitteryGreen · 06/05/2022 14:05

Tbh I'm surprised they're not taking this a bit more seriously, when I had positive tests with bleeding/spotting but nothing seen on scan I was monitored due to possibility of an ectopic pregnancy. I was diagnosed with a pregnancy of unknown location and my HCG levels were monitored via blood tests a few days apart to check they were decreasing.

I'd call your doctors back and ask for another referral to EPU, just in case.

cookielove · 14/05/2022 20:08

How is it going @Lisargh68 🙂

Numbertwenty · 14/05/2022 21:57

I fell pregnant with a coil
This should be treated as pregnancy of unknown location. I had scans and blood tests until the baby was seen where it should be. Until then I was warned about all the signs to look for for ectopic etc.
Also, insist that they find out where the coil is. I was told it would be fine to leave where it was. Turns out it was imbedded in my bowel.
