Pregnancy After Post Partum Haemorrhage anyone?

I’m just looking for some advice, we had our second baby in November 2021, there is 11 years between my first and my second.
I was induced at 36 weeks due to gestational diabetes and the fact they thought he would be a big baby.
I ended up having an emergency section but had a huge haemorrhage and ended up having to have a balloon put in to stop the bleed, I also spent a day and night on critical care having transfusions.
I was adamant that after the ordeal, we wouldn’t ever be having anymore, but my Partner has been talking about the possibility of having another in the next couple of years or so and I’m just wondering if there are any Mums who this has happened to and whether you had another haemorrhage in any pregnancies after the haemorrhage? If that makes sense!

Sorry for the long post! X

Following!

My PPH doesn't sound as severe as yours but still needed two blood transfusions. Currently 31 weeks pregnant with number 2 (5 years after our first) and hoping for a calmer delivery this time.

@feliznavidad2 Aww exciting! Congratulations! I had my first when I was 19 and he’s 12 now and when I met my partner we always said we would have 2 babies but after what happened it completely put me off!

I really hope you have a much calmer experience this time! Did they give you a reason for your PPH?

@Fayezp1210 not really, I don't think the placenta wanted to come away and also I developed (sorry if TMI) a vulval varicose vein during last pregnancy which ? burst during DS' birth. He was born via assisted delivery in theatre with ventouse after a long induction.

This time, I'm hoping for less intervention in the first place which the obstetrician thinks will hopefully prevent a further chain reaction e.g. hopefully won't need to be induced which lessens likelihood of assisted birth etc. Equally she said they'll be on heightened alert for the risk of PPH and as such, will have appropriate medicine/blood products on hand if necessary.

Fingers crossed for some positive responses for you - I'll let you know the outcome once babe has arrived.

I had a 4th degree year and PPH with my first. Waited 17 years to have my second. I was under consultant care and had a planned CS. Unfortunately I did Haemorrhage again and was in CC but only for 12 hours. Transfusions for 3 days. All fine now 11 years later. I think the consultant care meant they were really prepared.

Fayezp1210 · 05/05/2022 08:24

@feliznavidad2 Oh bless you! They told me that mine was caused due to being induced and being on the hormone drip for over 24 hours, they said the uterus just didn’t contract.

Yes let me know how you get on! Its interesting to hear other peoples experiences of this.

@WineNoMore20 I was under consultant for the pregnancy too. They did say afterwards in a debrief that if we decide to have anymore it will be consultant led again as it comes under high risk.

I didn’t have any bleed with my first so it was a bit of a shock this time round. Did they give you any reasons for the PPH?

I had a PPH with my first - not as bad as yours at all, but required two blood transfusions. DS2 was born last month and I didn't haemorrhage at all. DS1 was spontaneous labour, but he was awkwardly positioned and I tore quite badly, while DS2 was induced with the drip, but was otherwise a quicker and easier delivery. This time, I was on the labour ward, not the attached MLU, and everyone being aware of my history meant that I got the jab to deliver the placenta immediately and the midwives were also working on me to staunch bleeding straight away.

So you may be lucky, or the pre-knowledge may mean a better experience. But equally, there's nothing wrong with not wanting to take the risk again if you're not happy with it - recovery from my first birth took a LONG time and very much meant I didn't enjoy the first few months of motherhood.

WineNoMore20 · 05/05/2022 08:41

No reason given, not that I remember.

Fayezp1210 · 05/05/2022 08:42

@TheBestSpoon Oh gosh! Same here, my baby is 6 months now and I’m only now starting to feel better. The first few months I just felt awful and I’ve had an additional transfusion after being discharged too.

Its just one of those things isn’t it! It wouldn’t be happening any time soon so I guess I do have a while to ponder it further.

I had a PPH with my second baby. It too was an induced Labour, but was very quick - 2 hours start to finish once I went into active labour - and the consultant thinks this may have been the reason my uterus didn’t fully contract. I had planned on having another baby, but after that experience, didn’t want to risk it.

You say your partner wants another, but actually, do YOU want one? You’re the one who’s taking the risks, not him!

Fayezp1210 · 05/05/2022 08:50

@Soontobe60 Sorry I don’t think I worded it properly! He has just brought it up in conversation :) We had always planned on having 2 babies together, and I would love another, but the whole experience and the not knowing if it would happen again does put me off a little.

I had an emergency c section with my first nearly 11 years ago due to dangerously high blood pressure and had to have a blood transfusion. Had my second child nearly 6 years ago via VBAC and went fine did bleed quite a bit after but didn’t need a blood transfusion( people said why would you have another one after what you went through with the first 🤣) I know I’m crazy but currently 31 weeks pregnant with my third and hoping all goes well this time like my 2nd.

Fayezp1210 · 05/05/2022 09:11

@Fizzybubblegumbottles Congratulations! How exciting! I hope everything goes well for you too! It’s nice to hear positive stories!

@Fayezp1210 thank you 🙂 you just can’t predict labour and birth! My sister was induced with her first which was fine, spontaneous labour with second both normal births but 3rd was induced but was not progressing had to have an emergency c section which didn’t expect just thought it would be another normal birth.

I hope if you decide to have another child in the future it goes all well for you x

Fayezp1210 · 05/05/2022 09:45

@Fizzybubblegumbottles Thank you!
Thats true, it is so unpredictable. I was induced with my first and ended up having a forceps delivery. I didn’t expect to have an emergency section this time round! It was a bit of a shock x
