Morning sickness - what to eat

Help me, my brain has dribbled out around my ears and I can’t think of foods that will help.

I’m living off potato stick type crisps and the occasional McDonald’s; also craving spicy things. Fruit is straight to Defcon Vomit territory. Anything sweet is a no-go. No to eggs, tuna, baked potatoes, any kind of potato except chips, avocado. Water is horrible but I’m forcing it down.

Hit me with your processed food snacks I can load up on/experiment with please and I’ll drag myself to the supermarket. I know I could just go and stare at the shelves but I’m starving and stupid and will literally just stare at the shelves and fail.

Pork pies, savoury eggs, cheese and crackers are my go to's atm. Also marmite on toast. I'm also craving cucumber and tomatoes this time round, last time nothing green or fresh passed my lips until 20 weeks!

ReeseWitherfork · 03/05/2022 07:20

I ate a lot of crackers breadsticks and biscuits.

Sorry you’re feeling so crap OP, hope it passes soon.

I found the “pain” episode of Headspace on Netflix really useful. (And I’m not usually a mindfulness/meditation type person.)

TulipsGarden · 03/05/2022 07:24

Crisps of all varieties. Gravy made everything more appetising. Cheese. I vividly remember eating a veggie lasagne ready meal and it being the most delicious thing ever. Basically beige carbs.

I couldn't eat anything green for the first 20 weeks either @ChaiTea20 , my brain told me it was poison 🤦

PiesMcPieFace · 03/05/2022 07:35

Crackers. 24 hours a day. Keep them by your bed and eat them if you wake in the night.
Mozzarella was another go to for me (I suddenly wasn't lactose intolerant while pregnant).
Pasta with cheese.
I couldn't go near fruit, anything tomato based, eggs, red meat, tuna, garlic....I feel your pain.
I ate plain foods continually. One trick is to just never let yourself get hungry - that helps a lot.
And gaviscon.

Shmithecat2 · 03/05/2022 07:37

Family bag of salt and vinegar crisps, mostly used as a carrier for Laughing Cow cheese triangles.

Khalas · 03/05/2022 07:37

Honey nut loops. Only thing I could eat. Good luck.

Shmithecat2 · 03/05/2022 07:37

And sliced peppers.

Borgonzola · 03/05/2022 07:52

Yup, as pp said, dry crackers, toast, plain biscuits like digestives and hobnobs.
Couldn't have cereal or green veg, I basically stopped dairy for a bit (yes I know, calcium, but it's in plenty of other things besides dairy).
Chewed gum a lot to counteract the unpleasant mouth taste.
Tried ginger things but it didn't help.
The main thing is just to eat at the first sign of hunger. I threw up waiting for the toaster to pop a few times... just don't wait and have something always available eg packet of crackers, biscuits.

felulageller · 03/05/2022 07:52

You need ginger.

Have it any way you like but it does reduce nausea

mummyh2016 · 03/05/2022 07:53

Chicken super noodles.

WhiskerPatrol · 03/05/2022 07:55

Bakery pretzels - ideally Lidl

DifficultBloodyWoman · 03/05/2022 07:56

Toast and cheesy biscuits like they used to hand out on airplanes.

Derbee · 03/05/2022 07:58

Popcorn
crackers
plain pasta
cheese strings

That’s what I lived in. Good luck, it’s awful. But I’m currently looking down at my gorgeous 3 week old baby, and the sickness etc is all worth it.

Brendabigbaps · 03/05/2022 08:01

Pita bread & (pasteurised) brie
scotch eggs
plain crisps
Diet Coke.
pretty much the only things I could stomach

stuntbubbles · 03/05/2022 09:15

So much cheese suggested here! Absolutely not! But thank you, everyone, for the inspired suggestions.

The “don’t wait til you’re hungry” tip is a good one and I think that was today’s issue – I woke up with gnawing hunger at 5am but was too tired to move/enjoying a rare treat of not having a preschooler lying on my head. I’ve now got a tube of breadsticks by the bed and secret stashes of salt and vinegar, and picked onion, crisps in every handbag and drawer and under my pillow. Touch-and-go moment in the supermarket when I reached for Ritz crackers and the dry heaves told me “No! Danger lies here!”

Aeroplane cheesy biscuits are EXACTLY what I want, though. Or some kind of intravenous hot sauce drip.

That's what everyone told me.
It really didn't work.
21 years on and I still can't face anything with ginger in it!

I survived for about 6 weeks on dry rice crispies.
After that I could cope with the occasional micro waved ready meal as the cooking smell was around for such a short time I could actually get some down before throwing up. Anything that involved longer cooking was a definite no-go.

stuntbubbles · 03/05/2022 09:22

Oh, yes – ginger didn’t work last time. Nor did acupuncture or seasickness bands or boiled sweets. I can’t actually remember what did work, except sleep, and that’s in short supply.

Having said that I’m drinking very spicy ginger beer in bed and it’s doing the Lord’s work.

Cocobeau · 03/05/2022 09:24

Bacon rolls or chicken & bacon sandwiches seem to work well for me.
Crisps always (maybe get some of the ultra spicy flavours)
boring toast
Some Wheetabix went down ok this morning

That's about all I'm happy eating at the moment. And I'm sick of the few people who know telling me to try ginger. I've tried it, in numerous different ways, each one sending me over the edge. Even the thought of ginger makes me want to hurl.

bellinisurge · 03/05/2022 09:27

All I could manage - because I couldn't even keep water down at one point - was lettuce and cucumber. I had to buy one of those Brita filters for water and even that tasted vile.

Dinosaurus86 · 03/05/2022 09:30

I ate mostly crumpets for several weeks!

timestheyarechanging · 03/05/2022 09:40

Ginger is your friend, I kept ginger biscuits everywhere.
This sounds bonkers but my late MiL told me an old wives tale that putting a potato at the end of your bed helps and it did! Worth giving it a try?

I craved salt beef with my first -poor ExH had to go to to Brick Lane beigel bakery on a regular basis. Rice pudding with my second.

timestheyarechanging · 03/05/2022 09:41

And I went off coffee and bacon both times, took about a year after they were born to try them again.

knowinglesseveryday · 03/05/2022 09:55

Baked potatoes. 100%.

Cocobeau · 03/05/2022 10:51

Oh, how could I have forgotten my absolutely new must have accessory. Orange Calippos!
Not only do they help with the nausea but it's also nice to feel a bit of hydration through something other than water.

Jupiter92 · 03/05/2022 12:06

All I could eat for about 24 weeks was super noodles - chicken flavour!
