Hyaluronic acid in face creams

Is it okay to use this acid? I need a moisturiser that isn't going to cost a fortune but I'm a little weary about what's okay to put on my skin. They all seem to have hyaluronic acid in!
Any recommendations for pregnancy safe ones? I've looked at green people and aveeno, both these are okay?

It's just a moisturiser, I wouldn't think twice about using it in pregnancy

jimmyeatworld · 02/05/2022 13:38

Thanks. Anyone else ?

My midwife suggested looking up pregnancy date brands and to stay away from chemicals whilst pregnant. Over the counter moisturisers etc have a low amount of chemicals in them but she said she wouldn’t take the risk. I found there are still good brands out there that are safe for during pregnancy. My skin felt really dry until around 20 weeks and then it was fine!

If you're already worried about it then just go with Aveeno or other natural brand like Boots Botanics. Or face oils.

MrOllivander · 02/05/2022 14:20

It's fine, it's a hydrating acid, not an actual acid
Your skin is designed to keep things out

Hyaluronic acid is a substance found in human skin, it’s nothing to worry about. Skincare ingredients to avoid in pregnancy are retinol/vitamin A, salicylic acid, and hydroquinone. Other than that, you’re probably fine to crack on.

Could you recommend any?

Conflicting stuff about it online but most things seem to say it's okay. I just want a bog standard moisturiser that's not full of nasties basically. Also going away soon so will need something to use on my face after being in the sun.

Everything is made from chemicals.

Some midwives are idiots. My friend’s told her not to lift her arms above her head. It would have made hair washing difficult if she’d been daft enough to listen.

You have to be really risk averse to avoid salicylic acid. Are you conflating studies on oral ingestion with topical usage?

Bloody useless advice. Literally everything is made of chemicals. Water is a chemical.

Dear all

I find it very difficult to read the ingredients list of creams, serums and determine if they contain the chemicals (as I noticed that sometimes the name may be slightly different or the chemical itself) that should be avoided during pregnancy.

I was wondering if anyone is/was using the below products and if you know if they are safe or not for pregnancy:

Dermalogica Age Smart Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 50
Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Complex
Elemis Pro Collagen Overnight Matrix

Kind regards
Nana

@jimmyeatworld @NV42 this website is good for advice on pregnancy safe products and you can search through specific brands: www.15minutebeauty.com/pregnancy-friendly-skincare-products.html

NV42 · 04/05/2022 13:37

@Overlyanxious many thanks for this. I will check it out. May I ask what moisturiser you use and is it combined with mineral sunscreen filters (I did some reading this morning :-)

For me I have to avoid any face cream with hylauronic acid in

It isn’t necessarily because I am allergic to HA but because of how it works and what else is added to get it to work.
Anything that I am even barely sensitive to gets drawn into my skin and I get a dreadful reaction The last time it was so bad I have ended up in A&E looking like I was an acid attack victim or someone had thrown a pan of boiling water over me

Sheets of skin were peeling off and my face was bright red and sore.

Overlyanxious · 05/05/2022 10:21

@NV42 I use Aveeno and sunscreen.

NV42 · 05/05/2022 12:09

@Overlyanxious Thank you. I actually just ordered an Aveeno Mineral sunscreen although I had to order it from the US as it seems we dont have many mineral sunscreens here in the UK. They seem to be very popular in the USA.

Hyaluronic acid is something that is in your skin already and helps it to retain moisturiser i use it before my normal moisturiser to make help my skin absorb as much as possible. I assumed there wouldn't be a problem using it in pregnancy because its already in the body. I use simple moisturiser or lush as my skin is very sensitive and can't cope with chemicals neither say anything about not using in pregnancy and I used simple all the way through my last pregnancy with no harm. To be honest most things that say to ask your midwife are because they haven't been tested as its unethical to test of pregnant women so they can't say its OK even when most of the time it is.
