Just wondering if anyone has one and what are their opinions, we are contemplating getting one.. ive not heard anything bad said about them really, just a few ppl thought they were a bit "gimmicky". Anyone have any thoughts? TIA.

Nixx, I'm pretty sure I'm getting one too so can't be any help at the moment BUT do a search in the talk topics and there are a number of threads on this Nest that come up. I think everything I read was positive. Also, if you look on ebay there are quite a few that come up that are 'brand new and in box' and around £70 ish, cheaper than the £120 (I think) full price.

Aitch · 10/01/2008 16:21

GET ONE! there's nothing gimmicky about getting a good night's sleep.

Thanks girls x

What are they?

Jaysthird · 10/01/2008 20:04

I got one from Ebay for DS1 unfortunately he HATED sleeping on his back with a passion and from day one would scream till i put him on his tummy(of course you cant do this in an Amby) so i had to go out within the first week and buy a moses basket...
i was pretty pissed off as i loved all the ethics behind it and even the look of it, but i had to go with what he wanted!

moocowme · 11/01/2008 09:42

Jaysthird i think you just got unlucky with it. I just got one for ds who is 16 weeks (bought it way earlier on ebay but seller was very slow) and ds sleeps well in it. if he stirs during the night the gentle motion puts him back to sleep.

scary, go on to ebay and do a search for 'amby natures nest' and you will see pictures. I know have it saved as a favourite and as soon as I have my move of house out the way (2 weeks) I shall be buying one. Am I sad in preferring the white to raw cotton???

Janus · 11/01/2008 12:59

now !!

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 11/01/2008 16:39

I have one for my DD and she loves it. I'd definitely recommend getting one!

scaryhairycat · 11/01/2008 16:48

Sorry janus - have been out all day and just seen your post! I see what they are now - bit like a hammock I s'pose. No you are not sad prefering the white one - the raw cotton might look a bit like bandages up close anyway!

Kezza7779 · 11/01/2008 17:55

Hi everyone, i love this concept and was going to get one but my mum says that babies should be led flat, when ive had discussions about pushchairs inparticularly the car seat on wheels type midwives say they are no good cuz baby should be lay flat as much as possible. The hammock doesnt keep them flat it curves.....

Aitch · 11/01/2008 20:18

okay, what's happening to your baby right now? do you have an extendable lie-flat womb? it's nonsense, utter nonsense that babies should lie flat.
of course they shouldn't be left in car seats for long periods as their breathing becomes compromised, but the angle is completely different in an amby. is your mum a paediatrician?
i think they've sold 25,000 of these hammocks, btw, not one cot death. that's good going, i think.

EmMcK · 11/01/2008 20:33

I have one for 10 week old DS and he sleeps REALLY well in it, happily does a 6 hour stretch. It rocks when he moves so if he is unsettled, it swings and settles him, and I can give him a wee push if I wake in the night and can hear him chuntering away to himself. He gets enough completely flat time what with going out in the pram and lounging around on the floor. Also, I sometimes bring him into bed with me in the mornings, and he doesn't seem to have a problem with sleeping on a really flat surface, so I am not worried about the transition to a bed. Famous last words....
Oh, and another thing, he had a wee cold and it was very easy to tighten up one end so that his head was a wee bit elevated which helped his breathing.
Now, pls touch wood for the cot death post, forgive me, both grandmothers wickedly superstitious.

Hi, I was hoping those of you who already have one of these could help me, I'm trying to talk dh into buying one for new baby (dc3) but the site gives no idea of how big they are. That is to say, how much space you need to have one next to your bed.

We have previously always used cotbed from birth for other kids but new bedroom much smaller and so seeking alternatives. Anyone with a handy tape measure prepared to help me out?

Many thanks!

EmMcK · 11/01/2008 21:14

Hi Sybil, they look HUGE on the web, but aren't really, probably a similar footprint to a moses I would guess. I can measure it tomorrow morning for you though if you like, DS happily asleep in it now.

PiggyPenguin · 11/01/2008 21:16

That's fantastic, thanks very much. I would really appreciate it if you could measure it. I'd hate to buy one and then have it be too big!

Really really appreciate the help, thanks!

Aitch · 11/01/2008 21:17

the thing about them is that you can keep the bottom part under your bed, iykwim? and slide it out when you need to move it? it's smaller than a cot but bigger than a moses basked, imo.

Kezza7779 · 12/01/2008 00:06

uh ok aitch i was only asking..... no of course my mum isnt a paediatrician? its just what they were told when they were younger!

EmMcK · 12/01/2008 09:27

Hi - the base is 70cm x 100cm, but the actual bed itself is smaller. As Aitch said, you can tuck some of the frame away too . Hope this helps your decision

Aitch · 12/01/2008 19:59

kezza, sorry if i came down on you too hard there. truth is, if you're going to go by everything your mum learned 25 years ago you're going to come up against A Lot of guidelines that have changed as our knowledge and understanding has increased. mums are great and sometimes talk a lot of sense but sometimes they talk shite and becoming a good mother yourself is about knowing how to spot the difference, imo.

tyaca · 12/01/2008 22:12

hiya, am thinking of getting one. was also thinking of getting one of those movement sensor monitors. quick - perhaps dumb -- question, would the two be compatable?

cheers

Aitch · 12/01/2008 23:15

i doubt it, tbh, i'd say they're mutually incompatible. i remember wanting one of those sensors but in retrospect (unless there are specific worries) i think they come under the banner of Things Designed To Make New Mums Neurotic. the hammock is delightful, i used to sleep with my hand in it every night, on my dd's feet. oh, it was lovely, and if she started to stir it was easy just to move my hand a little and set it bouncing. i just can't recommend them highly enough, tbh.
