Drunk before I knew I was pregnant SO WORRIED

Hello all, I know there have been several other threads on this topic but I’m desperate for some personal reassurance.

Did any of you mums drink really heavily in the days following your missed period? Middle of gestational week 5/Fetal week 3? I didn’t know I was pregnant and was overly confident in 2 negative tests the day and day after my missed period. I had a boozy book club and went to a friends wedding and got really drunk (wine, cocktails, shots) that week.

All the animal studies on FASD say this week (around days 15-17) is an absolute critical window and is when facial malformations and brain damage is likely to occur. I know the placenta is not yet in action but how does it then affect other animals so badly?

Ive been in a total haze of anxiety for the last 3 days - crying and struggling to eat or sleep (I have OCD/anxiety so I accept I might be blowing this out of proportion).

Please can I hear from some mums that drank heavily in the days after their missed period?

Thank you x

I did. I was maid of honour at my friend's wedding. We started with champagne for breakfast and went from there! I hadn't been trying to get pregnant and was using bc. I was mortified when I counted back. DC got straight As at school, a first class honours degree at a Russell group uni and is flying in his career. He's early 30s now. I'm thinking I got away with it!

Krakenchorus · 29/04/2022 15:34

Been there, done that. The dc are absolutely fine.

Like 90% of parenting is guilt. Stop worrying about this, you don't want to peak too early!

coldlocation · 29/04/2022 15:38

Also me... Drink and recreational drugs as I didn't know I was pregnant.

DS1 a healthy, strapping 17 yo now and when I mentioned all this at my midwifery 'booking in' appointments no one told me off or raised a concern.

Aria2015 · 29/04/2022 15:39

Yes, I found out I was pregnant with my son the morning after my work Christmas do, which involved loads of Prosecco, shots and puffing away on some cigarettes (the only time I smoke is if I'm hammered). I would have been about 5-5.5 weeks along. He's 6 now and bright as a button. My doctor told me it's very common and not to worry. You can't undo it, so try and just put it out of your mind. St highly unlikely you'll have any issues.

A rat pregnancy is 21 -24 days and a mouse pregnancy is 20 days. These are the 2 most common models used in scientific literature. Days 15-17 would be middle to end of pregnancy.

In a human day 15 -17 is actually about the time you conceive or shortly thereafter.

You will be fine

WorriedB333 · 29/04/2022 15:54

@Aimee1987 Thanks so much for coming back. I thought this too at first but they did the study with the mice/rats/monkeys a few days after conception to directly target a scientific period called ‘gastrulation’ to coincide with human day 15-17. 😢

To clarify, I mean this happens 15-17 days after egg is fertilised, not after first day of LP.

TBH, I think nearly all unplanned pregnancies in adults would have some level of alcohol consumption in the early days.

I found out I was pregnant at 12 weeks and had been on 2 wild hen do's before hand. Was filled with the fear but DS is absolutely fine.

fuckoffImcounting · 29/04/2022 16:12

On holiday in Greece, pissed as a fart, my DC is 30 now and a successful academic.

LittleMG · 29/04/2022 16:17

I had a great night out and got pissed the night before I found out I was pregnant with my son. All was fine so try not to worry, also what’s done is done. X

CarrieCookie · 29/04/2022 16:17

Chill OP, this happens a lot!! Try not to be too anxious and enjoy your pregnancy Flowers

showmethegin · 29/04/2022 17:35

Please don't worry OP; this is a problem for nearly every woman I know! As long as you stop drinking now you're fine.

CallMeNutribullet · 29/04/2022 17:42

My cousin was hammered the weekend before she found out she was pregnant and felt terrible about it.
Perfectly healthy baby girl.

TheGirlWithTheGreyBunny · 29/04/2022 17:48

Yes unfortunately was 9 weeks when I found out with one of my children and had been drinking a few times a week as it was summer and I was having alot of bbqs and parties. He’s fine now

astoundedgoat · 29/04/2022 17:54

Me! I was invited to dine at high table at a Cambridge college and there was SO MUCH WINE at dinner and then there was port afterwards and I was feeling shy so I drank waaaaaaay more than I should have because the bottle just kept coming round and round and I hadn't done any of that before so I didn't know you could just let it pass etc. I was staying at a friends house and I had the spinnies nearly all night and was like a CORPSE the next day.

Anyway, took a pregnancy test on a whim when I got home and she is a healthy, happy and clever tween, playing very loudly upstairs right now!

MintyMoocow · 29/04/2022 17:57

I am sat staring at a great six foot teenager scarfing down a bag of Wotsits as I write. On for straight As at A/level, grade 8 sax and clarinet. When I was pg with her I did a negative test on the Friday, spent the weekend legless and then did positive test on the Monday.
Try not to worry!

GeminiTwin · 29/04/2022 18:00

Meeeeee!

I did IVF too work that one out!

3 days before test day I had a humongous bleed, clots, the lot. Thought I miscarried as the amount of blood was obscene.

Went out that night to drown my sorrows and got absolutely rat arsed.
Next morning spent singing down the toilet.

Rang IVF clinic and booked me for a scan on the Monday (I went out on Friday) to make sure everything had cleared so we could prepare for round 2.
Baby on the screen with a strapping heartbeat. Had an internal bleed of an unknown source / could've potentially been a lost twin we're still unsure to this day.

DD currently sat next to me watching peppa pig.

Don't stress about it.

Aquamarine1029 · 29/04/2022 18:05

You literally have nothing to worry about. I was drinking like a fish on a two week holiday with my husband before I discovered my pill failed. My little surprise is now 25, 6'4, gorgeous and smart as a whip.

WorriedB333 · 29/04/2022 18:10

Thank you all, this has been really reassuring ❤️

My almost 2 year old is upstairs sleeping. I drank whole bottle of wine before I knew I was pregnant.
Hes in front of his peers developmentally, hes doing fine. Don't panic

timestheyarechanging · 29/04/2022 23:18

I did too as I didn't expect to fall pregnant so quickly (first month off the pill). Felt so guilty and told my midwife who told me not to worry. Daughter is now 23 and very healthy and successful.
Try not to worry and congratulations

toastfiend · 29/04/2022 23:28

I got completely ratarsed at a ball a couple of days before finding out I was pregnant with DS. He's 3 now, happy, healthy and exactly where he should be developmentally (alongside an encyclopaedic knowledge of dinosaurs).

I honestly really wouldn't worry about it.

As someone who has bad anxiety, though, do keep an eye on it. Pregnancy and birth sent mine a bit haywire and it made me quite mentally unwell for a while. I'm not saying this to be patronising, but do make sure your midwife/health care providers are aware of your anxiety if they're not already, and seek help if this kind of intrusive worrying becomes more regular relating to your pregnancy. I ended up going through IAPT after I'd given birth and found it very helpful - I saw someone very quickly so believe they fast tracked me as it was post natal related, so support is easier to come by than it would be ordinarily.
