Travelling at 6 weeks pregnant and terrrified!

Hi all, I'm looking for some reassurance! We are due to go on our belated honeymoon in two weeks, at which point I'll be about 6/7 weeks pregnant with our first. And I am so, so scared about developing morning sickness while I'm away!

I'm currently 5 weeks pregnant and feeling very tired already, and sometimes a little nauseous. The prospect of a 12 hour flight and being so far from home is really worrying me. I've done all the right things - stocking up on ginger biscuits, Peppermint tea, and even getting my doctor to prescribe me anti nausea medication as a 'just in case'.

Can anyone who has travelled while suffering morning sickness offer any reassurance or top tips? :)

I flew 11 hours at 7 weeks pregnant, the food on the plane was disgusting to me and I couldn't eat a thing so I recommend stocking up on sandwiches and snacks at the airport just in case. Go with things you know you like. And get lots of water!
Also just take a bag to throw up in if you need to.

Have a lovely holiday and congrats on the honeymoon and the pregnancy!

Hi, I think if there are any other snacks that may help you then add them to your list. I find when feeling nauseous I need a mix of different snacks. Some sweet and some savoury. Eating regularly also helps.

I travelled about the same time as you and I found that there were some foods and drinks I needed to avoid as they made me feel sick - but once I knew that I just ate bland food.

Regenbogen22 · 27/04/2022 13:16

Pack lots of really plain carby snacks for the plane and the hol. Plain, slightly salty crackers, plain biccies (Rich Tea or something similar?) etc. Just in case you don't have much of an appetite, but need to keep something in your stomach in case of nausea.

Also lots of water. Buy some big bottles at the airport before you fly or refill your own big bottle. I know you get drinks on long haul but nice to always have your own supply.

Regenbogen22 · 27/04/2022 13:20

Sorry to add on, the peppermint tea is a great idea - can you boil water and make tea where you're staying? Just a thought.

I suffered quite a bit with bloating early on, so maybe pack some Rennie Deflatine or whatever own brand (the ingredient is "simeticone" and it disperses air bubbles in the digestive system).

Regarding the bloating, if you're off somewhere hot, consider loose, floaty clothing that won't dig in. Fit and flare dresses, maxi dresses, loose cover-ups.

I developed 24/7 nausea when I was exactly 6 weeks. I think that’s a typical timeframe. It’s highly likely you will develop nausea before / while you’re away as you say you are a little nauseous now, but there is little you can do about it. The downside of a wonderful situation I’m afraid.

You may have the type of nausea where you are ravenous all the time, but maybe avoid onions and garlic and stick to bland foods and cautiously try foods that may trigger nausea to see how you get on. Always have food on you. I dry heave when I’m hungry. Ginger biscuits made me feel worse, too much sugar. Toast, mashed potato, cauliflower cheese were what I fancied but everyone is different.

Finally, congratulations! Have a wonderful honeymoon

AmyAW · 27/04/2022 13:36

@Jupiter92 This is so reassuring! I'm so glad someone else has survived flying long haul at an early stage of pregnancy. I've ordered lots of sick bags. I think my biggest fear is any nausea striking in the passport queue!

@Regenbogen22 @Overlyanxious Fab tips on food. I have packed biscuits but may buy more things. Where we are staying is quite remote so if I don't bring it, I won't have it!

@DangerouslyBored Oh goodness that must have been miserable. I'm such a vommy person normally that I'm just convinced that I'll be in that situation too! That's good to know about bland food. I've been pinning all my hopes on ginger biscuits but might diversify a bit!

Very reassuring to know others have made it through this stage :)

These were brilliant when I had morning sickness, may be worth keeping a few on you for the flight

It's not nice when you're going through it but you'll find your own little ways of coping, everyone does 🙂 Enjoy your holiday!

Regenbogen22 · 27/04/2022 13:56

Oh lord, I'm going to be that person on this thread, but since you've said you'll be quite remote, @AmyAW I feel like I have to.

All these tips for nausea are fab, and you might not suffer even the slightest!! I of course wish you a wonderful honeymoon. But it's also important to remember that you are still so early in the pregnancy, and anything can happen. High chances are it won't!!

In my last pregnancy last year I lost symptoms at 6 weeks exactly, and started to bleed later that week. It was just an unfortunate very early miscarriage, no complications or bad pain or anything. more like a heavy period. But I am so glad I was at work/home where I had access to sanitary towels. Which is something you probably wouldn't even think to take.

I am so sorry to bring this up on this thread but we have to be realistic and like you said, you'll be remote. Maybe just pack a few.
😘

This is a very sensible suggestion and we are thinking of all eventualities. We know travelling doesn't make the risk any more likely, but obviously being cut off from help would be a challenge. We'll pack a few, just in case, but fingers crossed we won't need them :)

Recently did a 12 hour flight at approx 6 weeks pregnant. Had a scan beforehand to confirm intrauterine pregnancy, as dealing with an ectopic abroad even somewhere with good healthcare would be awful. Sturdy sick bags, took some pre emptive anti sickness meds before the flight. Take extra water - thirst definitely issue for me and they just don’t offer enough drinks on flight. The bland airline meal was actually surprisingly palatable!
Check your insurance (most you don’t need to inform them of pregnancy, I did).
Have a lovely time!

Six week scan is such a good idea. We have booked one for a few days before we go, which will (hopefully) give a bit of reassurance, or will at least let us know the situation we are in.

Fingers crossed the airline food is predictably bland! I actually love airline food and so I'm rather hoping pregnancy doesn't rob me of that!

How lovely. I’m sure you will have a nice time.
You can buy these wristbands that apparently help alleviate the symptoms, might be worth looking into.

I’ve just got back from a short haul recently. Was 6/7 weeks. I find the key to preventing sickness was to have food to nibble on. Just keeping your stomach topped up with plain foods seems to help.

Buglife · 27/04/2022 15:04

I went away when 9 weeks pregnant with my 2nd which was for me both times the lowest point for vomiting! So I got anti nausea medication before I went. Salty and plain carbs were good, and water etc. The main thing was the tiredness, I needed an afternoon nap with my toddler every day. Don’t wear yourself out by planning long excursions!

SareBear87 · 27/04/2022 15:36

I did a 16 hour flight at 7 weeks (18 hours and 8 weeks on the way back) - the flights were horrific as I had full pg sickness. The air stewards were awesome, do tell them. They gave me sick bags, water, small snacks, etc.
I threw up in line for passport control and my partner (very loudly) kept saying "this pg is really taking out of you", "it won't last, think of the baby" - it was annoying/embarrassing but people were really kind!
The holiday itself was fine as I found so long as I ate carbs (thanks baby) I was ok. Hotel was accommodating with pasta/bread rolls. I'd 100% rather have pg sickness on holiday than at work anyday! 😆

AmyAW · 27/04/2022 20:23

@SareBear87 The fact it will be far nicer to be so poorly abroad than at work is keeping me going! 😂 So reassuring to know others have managed despite feeling unwell!

Yes to having nausea on holiday rather than at work. At work is hell. I had to run out of a meeting heaving and then throw up in the loos. I sat there as long as I could before I said I’ve got to go and ran off with my hands over my mouth..the indignity Grin

I still have nausea now at 14 weeks 🤦🏻‍♀️ and now working from home as too sick to commute. I still have Zoom calls and often have to turn the camera off to be sick. If men suffered with this crap, they’d be an amazing, incredible, effective cure!

Coco9910 · 28/04/2022 08:38

I went to New York when I was about 8 weeks pregnant and I was worried about getting morning sickness but it never came, so hopefully you will be the same! Maybe get some travel sickness bands and wear them during the flight to see if they help?
