What underwear to buy?!

I'm only 3 months pregnant (scan and blood tests next week) and now only have 1 bra that fits...

I know I need to buy a new bra soon - but how much will the size change?! Do I just buy 1 cheap one and then later buy larger others if needed?

Should I be buying a maternity bra?!

Clearly first time pregnant 😂 so any advice greatly appreciated!

I'm in exactly the same boat as you right now 😂😂

I switched to non wired bras pretty much right away as my boobs were so tender, I got some great advice on here and my favourite was the M&S flexifit range.

Non wired ones seem to have a bit more give in them so last longer for expanding boobs.

DoItAfraid · 23/04/2022 11:27

Well mine got REALLY big so I only bought cheapies in batches of 2 as the size went up, purely to save money. I wanted to save more money for feeding bras on the other side.

daysfilledwithdappledlight · 23/04/2022 11:34

Thanks so much! Yes it's one non underwired one that I'm pretty much living in full time 🤦‍♀️😂

Cheap replacement the next size up makes sense - they haven't ballooned yet!

Kept seeing people a few weeks pregnant more than me buying maternity ones and was wondering if I was missing something!!

Asda pull over bras are great and only £7 each I have lived in them for the past 29 weeks since I found out at 4 weeks. Whilst on the subject or underwear as you get bigger buy Asda black maternity knickers they have some other colours to. They are a god send and so comfortable.

@CSR721 I'm so glad it's not just me!!

@Flowerbug1994 thank you! Will have a hunt ☺️

I've just gone straight for nursing bras as then i can justify paying more for them as i'll be using them for 6 minths of pregnancy and 6 months of bf. Mine have gone up 2/3 cup sizes, but by 12 weeks they had stopped growing so i could shop

SunshineAndFizz · 23/04/2022 11:49

I was recommended to get fitted for a new bra at about 12 weeks (so about now for you). Go to somewhere like M&S for a decent measuring service (and then you can buy bras from wherever once you know the size).

I also then got another fitting done a couple of weeks before I was due (as the original bras were feeling tight) and got some nursing bras at that point.

daysfilledwithdappledlight · 23/04/2022 12:00

Ok next simple question....

Does the size keep increasing throughout or does the majority increase happen in the first 3 months?

I assumed they gradually increased the whole 9 months which was what led to the most confusion about how to ever have bras that fit 😂

@daysfilledwithdappledlight

hmmm testing my memory now but i had a big growth in the first trimester and then another one in the third trimester. When my milk came in it was game over 😫

deliwoman1 · 23/04/2022 12:17

I'm 30 weeks tomorrow and haven't invested in nursing bras yet! My boobs have grown so much since the first trimester (from B cup to an E) so I wouldn't invest in anything more than something cheap and comfy for now. If you're planning to breast feed, your boobs will grow bigger still. I'm waiting until baby is almost here to buy my first proper nursing bras, and I'll be getting some with just a little wiggle room for expansion too.

Spottybutterfly · 23/04/2022 16:45

At about 5 weeks I bought some bralettes from Amazon as my underwire bras were uncomfortable. They lasted until about week 16.

I then bought bralettes designed for breast feeding. However by week 20 my boobs were so big I felt like I needed underwires again. I bought a pack of 3 in Matalan, I've almost grown out of them at week 24.

I feel like I have giant boobs, I've went from a 36C to a 40DD and I think by next week I will be bigger.

Tangfastic91 · 23/04/2022 16:53

Unless you are totally spilling over, bra extenders could be a good shout for now. Sometimes you just need the extra room around the back. I went straight for nursing bras at about 20 weeks, the M&S ones come in S/M/L sizing which means you don't have to figure out your cup size as they can accommodate quite a few. Would reccomend them!

daysfilledwithdappledlight · 23/04/2022 21:05

Thanks so much for your advice - extremely helpful and understand when it's a more appropriate time to get maternity ones!

I think I've only gone a size up or so so I'll get a cheapo one for now as it's likely still going to change 🤞☺️

I second the M&S flexifit range - I am now living in their crop top bras (and did so first pregnancy too) as they are so comfortable! Even wore one when I gave birth - it was good for the pool! 👍

Mol89 · 24/04/2022 11:20

I bought crop top bras from M&S and cheap nursing bras from new look early on but neither were very comfortable for long as my boobs have just kept growing, rather than buy another bra I got some bra extenders from M&S and used them with the nursing bras which feel so much comfier! Think I’ll wait to invest in a good bra after I’ve established breast feeding or could spend a fortune.

fairgame84 · 24/04/2022 11:31

I got 2 cheap bras from m&s in the 1st trimester. I'll probably get nursing bras in the third trimester.
Im still wearing normal wired bras as I tried wireless but don't like the feel of them.
Best thing to do is go and try some on.

PeterpiperpickedapeckofpickledPEPPAS · 24/04/2022 11:39

Non wired or maternity bras tend to be more flexible size wise. Sometimes you see bras like that with dual cup sizing - so 34 D/DD 34E/F then 34FF/G type thing. That can be a good indication that the bra is elastic enough to grow with you for a bit longer. Maternity bras tend to have extra hook and eyes too so you have more room to grow in the ribs as well.
