C section - vaginal cleansing

Hi, looking for some advice.
I hadn't heard of vaginal cleansing before, apparently it's a fairly new thing that's done just before you have a c section (nhs). So after the spinal (I assume so that you don't feel anything?), while you're on the operating table, just before they start the procedure.

I understand it's something that you have to give consent for and the purpose of it is to reduce infection in your wound.

I've had a quick google and there is a bit of info out there. Has anyone had this done? Or is anyone able to shed a bit more light on it?
Thanks

Never heard of it. Don’t remember it being mentioned for either of my 2

I have never heard of this either and it wasn’t mentioned to me before my CS

Conclusion is it “probably” reduces the chance of a post op infection.

My immediate thought is did they include postop yeast infections? As wiping out vaginal bacteria sounds like a recipe for thrush.

I was given a massive bottle of hibiscrub and asked to shower the evening before, top to toe, and the morning of the section, again as thoroughly as possible and including hairwashing. Nothing intra vaginally though.

Hmm this is interesting. I haven't heard of it but I did have an infection in my wound after my c section so it's interesting!

I literally just had my pre assessment for my C section tomorrow and this wasn’t mentioned at all. I’ve never heard of it

sunshine423 · 18/04/2022 14:33

I had a c section 3 weeks ago and this didn't happen, there was no mention of it.

nearlyspringyay · 18/04/2022 15:08

Never heard of it either

Thanks for the posts, seems like it really must be a new new thing, or only in my trust. I'm going to have to ask them for for info

I remember them asking my permission for this before my c section over 2 years ago. Still think about it and gives me a little shiver, silly I know!

Yea I seen it done as I watched a video about c section the woman was unconscious by this point as she had to be put to sleep and while rubbing that brown liquid over her bump they also rubbed it all over her vagina and inside her vagina! I read the comments and yup it’s done all of the time to reduce infection I highly doubt they would ask consent as they are in there anyways putting in catheters

mubarak86 · 18/04/2022 23:53

I thought this was going to be about burning sage and smoking out your fanjo, and couldn't believe the NHS were advocating it. As you were.....
I had 3 c/s and don't recall any vaginal cleansing. In saying that though after a spinal you wouldn't really know anyway. I very naively went into my first c/s with pants on, I had no idea they'd go near your vagina or even be catherterized 😅

RussianSpy101 · 18/04/2022 23:55

I’ve had 3 csections and never heard of this

What a load of old bollicks. They should be doing the opposite - normal vaginal flora is very beneficial to the newborn.
