Hi I just found out I'm pregnant a few days ago. I'm exactly 5 weeks today.

I am really struggling with everything we can't do while pregnant.. smoking, coffee, vaping specifically..

I'm having some mild period like cramps at the moment

Definitely don't eat cats!

There's very little you can't do/should avoid really, I think there is a lot of needless hysteria around 'banned' things that are spurious at best. The NHS website is a good place to get info and the list is pretty short.

Coke/coffee is ok just keep an eye on the amount of caffeine you're having. Even a glass of wine is fine.
Soft cheese etc is about salmonella and food poisoning risk, as long as it's pasteurised the risk is pretty much non existent (and McDonald's ice cream and milkshakes are fine). Rare meat, undercooked seafood etc has its obvious risks.

Vaping while not a 'no no' can be cut back but you're already doing that.

Cats/animals, yes there's a risk but basic hygiene mitigates it. The biggest animal risks are things like being around lambing sheep.

It's also a short time, I do remember being very excited for a good steak after my first was born!

Sorry if I’ve missed the point, but if giving up vaping is so scary surely there’s nicotine in there? Otherwise you’re not addicted to it are you?

My friends that have been pregnant before keep sending me randomly things I can't eat or drink! Fish, coke, fennel, the list goes on and onnnn.. oh and CATS!

Are you in the UK? If so I'd really advise sticking to the NHS list re foods to avoid. Otherwise you'll get so much well-meaning but outdated advice from friends and family. SIL was convinced we weren't allowed egg at all, for example Grin

I don't advise eating cats but otherwise assume you are referring to toxoplasmosis?

The risk is really low, get someone else to do the litter trays & practice good hand hygiene. Cats only shed it for around 2 weeks if infected, & can only be infected once in their lifetime, so the chances of that being during the time you are pregnant is relatively low too.

You can get toxoplasmosis from unwashed veg, soil, infected meat too, so wash your hands, veg and chopping boards thoroughly too.

Ladies no we don't eat cats where I come from 😂😂😂 of course not. Poor cats!

I was told to stay away from cats, specially stray cats.. that's what I meant 😊😊

Why? There's no reason to avoid cats. The (very small) risk is toxoplasmosis which is in cat faeces.

I’m assuming you’re not in the UK? Some of the advice you’ve been given seems a bit… odd.

Pregnant women who own cats don’t just rehome them for 9 months!

Congratulations on your pregnancy 🙂

You shouldn't change a litter tray without wearing gloves but you can stroke a cat. Fish, fennel and Coke are fine. Tuna you should limit but I never even got close to the limit, it's something like 4 cans a week! I like tuna but who is eating that much? And swordfish but I expect you're not eating that either.

Definitely stick to the NHS list. There are so many random things on the internet that are probably just made up.
