I’m 4 1/2 weeks pregnant with baby #2 and was diagnosed with a UTI last night and prescribed antibiotics. Still not feeling great today my back hurts a lot where my kidneys are and wondering if the antibiotics are having any effect?

Do I wait it out or call 111 for advice?

I would have thought that the antibiotics would take more than a night to really kick into gear!

I had recurrent UTIs during my last pregnancy and I found the antibiotics used to kick in straight away. How long after having symptoms did it take to start taking the antibiotics? Only reason I ask is because when I first had it I didn't realise it was a UTI so I didn't seek medical help straight away. When I did contact my GP they kept me waiting nearly 6 hours for my prescription, by the time I had it it turned out it had spread to my kidneys and I ended up presenting at A+E the next day getting different antibiotics for a kidney infection. The pain was unbearable, I nearly called an ambulance at one point. I kept going hot, then I'd be sick, then I'd be freezing cold, then I'd be hot again. It was a vicious cycle.

Which antibiotics are you on? I had this same problem one, and went to a diff dr who said, ‘they shouldn’t bother prescribing trimethoprim- it doesn’t do anything!’

I’ve been prescribed nitrofyratonin. It seems to take the edge off the symptoms for a few hours then I’m back to the square 1 😔 I’m worried how this will effect my pregnancy if I leave it too long.

The GP who prescribed it said I should wait a few days before taking them as “these things tend to sort themselves out” and he suggested I take ibuprofen for the pain 🤯

Hmmm I was on nitrofurantoin and I found it stopped a lot of the symptoms within a couple of hours. It didn't actually shift mine though, I had around 5 courses of nitrofurantoin and then had to have a 4 week course of cefalexin to finally get rid.

Give it till tomorrow to see if any improvement, Nitro is a good strong antibiotic. Hope you're better soon. Drink loads! Hot water bottle for the pain.

Hey OP. I suffered from chronic UTIs in my pregnancy and again am suffering from one in this pregnancy. Don't let the doctors fob you off. You may need a longer course. Even if your dipstick comes back negative ask them to send of for a culture and ask for more antibiotics. I was on antibiotics for the length of my previous pregnancy and no doubt will be for this one. It's safe. I wish I was tougher in my first pregnancy and demanded to be taken seriously. I was told it wasn't a UTI so I developed an embedded infection and still suffer 5 years later. However you've not really given them much time to work it usually takes 48 hrs so try and relax. Good luck

Little update I started feeling worse last night and phoned 111. Have been prescribed some different antibiotics and for a week this time. Dr assured me that baby should be fine which was a relief to hear

I've just been through a horror story which started like this... Hope you've got antibiotics for kidney infection - as that's what you have if you have pain in the kidney area. They generally need a 10 day course of antibiotics to clear. Mine didn't. I was I'll for over two months. Ended up admitted to hospital twice, two weeks in hospital, treatment for sepsis and an emergency C-section. Hope they take you seriously!
