21 weeks pregnant and there's chicken pox going round DD's nursery

Just looking for a bit of reassurance really! I had chicken pox as a young child, probably around 3/4, the one bout of shingles aged around 9. DD (16 months)'s nursery have let us know that some of the children have had chicken pox. No sign of it in DD yet but it's only a matter of time, right...?

I'm not worried about DD really (sounds cold but I see chicken pox as an inevitability so might as well get it out of the way), but am vaguely concerned about myself/new baby as I know there's a risk of serious problems if you do actually get it in pregnancy....

But I had it as a kid so I'm fine right? Reassure me with tales of your DC getting all spotty while you were pregnant and all was well Grin

You’ve had it, you’ll be fine.

We advise if you are exposed when pregnant and you have definitely had it as a child then you need to worry. If you haven't had it or can't remember then the labs keep your booking bloods anyway and will test the sample for immunity.

Ah you will be fine, DS got it when he was 4 from
Nursery… I was about 30 weeks, had it as a kid. I was fine. It was a huge inconvenience DS being off nursery as we had an inspection team in at work so was the most stressful time trying to juggle things 🤣

Chicken pox wouldn’t be an inevitability if all kids got vaccinated. And you wouldn’t have to be worrying now.
I know it’s available privately (and is well worth doing), but we need it on the NHS to get here immunity.

Yep, my first DC had it (and was quite spotty!) when I was pregnant with my second. I was around the 20 week mark I think. I had had chicken pox as a child so all was well - I did get advice from the pharmacist at the time and they said there was no need to worry.

If you've had chicken pox and shingles then you are likely to be immune and will be fine if your dd gets it

You could have had her vaccinated, then it wouldn’t be. But yes, as per PP you should be fine.

My DD is vaccinated. You can get it privately at Boots, think it was £70 per jab. Well worth it IMO. In other countries it's standard practice and included in the vaccine schedule for kids. In Germany for example, it is. Here it's not as there's too many parents who don't get their kids vaccinated, at least that's what I read online when I looked into why it's not routinely offered here.

Thanks all, I am duly reassured Smile

I hadn't thought about getting DD vaccinated privately, seemed a bit pointless when she'd likely just inoculate herself naturally at some point, but thinking about it I can see the value. If she miraculously avoids this nursery outbreak I'll see where it's offered locally.
