I'm 14+2 and wondering when is it women are advised to try not to sleep on their back ? I usually fall asleep on my back as it's most comfortable for me, I switch around to sides but always wake up on my back! Worrying I'll never be able to do it!
I did buy a pregnancy pillow to put behind me but it's just massive atm and in the way so I've given up with it for now

Third trimester onwards. Even then it's probably not really an issue until you're really big, but I think the advice is usually try to do it from third trimester. Im a front sleeper and slept on my front both times until about 20 weeks when it was no longer comfortable. Both times it has been amazing returning to front sleeping once I'd recovered from birth haha.

Oh so no need to worry atm then?
Don't know how I'm going to do it, after a while on my side my whole body aches !

My midwife said 28 weeks, but also that by the time it’s really necessary it will feel uncomfortable to remain on your back, so it’s not as difficult to make the switch.

Could have written this post myself 😂 I HATE sleeping on my side and esp now my boobs are basically gigantic I feel like my own chest is suffocating me! Bought the BBhugme pillow after reading rave reviews but it's just in the way and I always end up on my back with it next to me or on the floor anyway 😂

17 weeks today so going to enjoy guilt free back sleeping for a bit longer, haha!

It used to be the advice to have a certain position but I understand the latest advice is just to sleep however you’re most comfortable

If you sleep on your back and the artery gets squished under the weight of your baby then you’ll get woken up, feeling dizzy and a bit odd, so then you’ll go back to sleep in a different position! Front sleeping is fine while you can, but I found my hips really ached sleeping on my side after a while

When it gets too uncomfortable too. I slept on my front with dd2 up until 6 or 7months. I was small. I only had to change to my side when we got anew mattress and it didn't have a dip where I'd been lying!

DottieDam · 13/04/2022 21:32

Don't change your sleep patterns too early!

Honestly, enjoy whatever sleep you can before you have to move to sleeping on side!

But also check with midwife about sleeping on back - I had to because of squishing, when you know you know - but there are posters in my maternity unit about risk of stillbirth and sleeping on back (but again from third trimester)

Honestly there is so much we have to be aware of isn't there! I can't sleep on my front anymore, even pre pregnancy, have a bad back ever since I had my ds and if I try and sleep on my front now I'm in agony
I will not worry about it atm then

I normally sleep on back and found it hard to follow the side sleeping advice. Using a pregnancy pillow helped a bit. Now I'm 29 weeks and it is getting a little uncomfortable on my back so I'm naturally turning to the side.

From 28 weeks you are advised to sleep on your side. I find it a challenge and often wake up on my back and quickly roll over. Pregnancy pillows help but also can just get annoyingly in the way!
