Am I having a huge baby?

Hi guys,
Just got back from my scan I'm 36 weeks and baby is apparently weighing 6.7lbs-I'm just slightly worried that, that's quite big-I know some people say that the estimated are quite inaccurate but I'm freaking out a little bit....I've read lots of horror stories about women having really big babies and things going horribly working during birth but I don't know if I'm just being a drama queen, I'm a FTM (shock 😉)
Thanks
Xxxxxx

Maybe you are, maybe you aren’t, you just can’t tell.
They thought my first was normal size, ended up being over 10lb 4.5kg, normal birth no pain relief no stitches.
They said my decorum’s would be huge, offered induction or c section early which I declined. Second weighed just under 8lb.
They just can’t tell. And a big baby doesn’t always mean complications.

Can I ask when they offered you a C-section, or discussed it as a possibility, I'm not sure what I want but I just want to know what would be best. I guess maybe they would have said something by now given I'm 36+1 Amazing that you had natural birth and no stitches I hope I'm able to do that to!

Like above could be, they could be wrong. I have had 2 kids. DD was 10lb6 and DS was 11lb, both pretty easy births. I needed stitches with both but honestly they don't hurt when getting them done and its just a bit of pain for a few days but I can imagine its painful for a few days after without the stitches! DS was born in the water with G&A and DD I had diamorphine. There are plenty of people who have horrible births with 5lb babies, its really nothing to do with size.

HDready · 13/04/2022 14:35

I think the average estimated weight gain for baby is 0.5lb per week in the final weeks. So that doesn’t sound like baby would be massive. But it’s all an estimate as you know.

Do yourself a huge favour, and try to avoid horror stories for the next few weeks!

TheSnowyOwl · 13/04/2022 14:36

That sounds quite a normal size to me and yes, the scans are often wrong and have a huge margin of error.

MakeSureYouHoldYourNose · 13/04/2022 14:43

Dc was estimated 6lbs 8oz at 36 week scan, when they came they were a respectable 7lbs 6ozs, I was induced because they thought DC would be big, so definitely a huge margin for error.

Holskey · 13/04/2022 17:52

The scans are so inaccurate. My baby was born at 35 weeks weighing 6lb10 but growth scans said he was average. And plenty of people are induced early because they're told they're having a huge baby only for their baby to be born 7lb etc.

Nikki037297 · 13/04/2022 17:57

Well babies out on half a pound a week in the end so if you went to 40 weeks your looking at around 8.7 which is not bad to be honest mt babies tend to grow about there by 40 weeks and it’s a nice weight to get out. Is this your first? My first was 8lb6 and we had issues at birth. But second time round by 9lb13 baby came out no issue. So try not to worry about the size/ what I tell myself is trust your body! It is designed to grow a baby and deliver that baby and extremely rarely would it grow a baby too big to deliver naturally because as far as your body knows there is only one way out for that baby. So please trust that your body is designed for this. Iv never ever needed a c-section and I’m small. 5’2 and was a size uk6 when I had I almost 10lb baby

HippeePrincess · 13/04/2022 20:42

They (consultant) offered c section or induction simply because I’d had a large baby previously and they estimated second baby would be the same.
I asked the question “ why would I want that given I had a complication free vaginal birth with a big baby last time?” They basically shrugged and said the offer was there if I wanted it. It didn’t seem to be based on anything in particular, I could understand if things had gone wrong previously. Sometimes I think as consultants rarely see uncomplicated cases they over medicalise normal cases based on the emergencies they deal with rather than midwives who deal with thousands of uncomplicated deliveries of all types.

whosaidtha · 13/04/2022 20:48

It should have been plotted on your graph so follow the line for an estimated weight.

swt123 · 14/04/2022 17:14

My baby is measuring 9lb 1 at 37.4 weeks. 97th centile vs last baby who was 1st centile. C section scheduled for 25th as I refused induction due to bad previous experience. Have to hope nothing happens before 25th when I'll be 39.4 weeks.

Frenchie8690 · 14/04/2022 17:37

Mine is on 99th centile at 30 weeks having had a 6 pounder as my first. Having a c section so I'm not bothered but if I wasn't I would be a bit nervous 😂

Lochjeda · 14/04/2022 17:41

My son at 34 weeks was estimated 6lb and was 9lb 9.5. I have had a 6lb, 8lb and 9lb 9.5 and the 6lb was by far the most painful labour. All of them were straight forward and fast.

TashieWoo · 14/04/2022 17:51

Mine was also 6lb7oz at my 36 week scan last week and she’s on the 52nd centile so only just above average, I was worried as well though.

Hiddenvoice · 15/04/2022 03:25

I had growth scans throughout my pregnancy. My baby was measuring over the 90th percentile and they were predicting her to be closer to 9lbs. She was born 7.5lbs so still a good size for me but not as large as all the scans say.
I had a c section for other reasons but I discussed this with my midwife quite early on and then it was finalised at 34 weeks. Talk to your midwife about your birth plan and share your thoughts. A bigger baby doesn’t necessarily mean a harder birth.

SingingSands · 15/04/2022 04:11

That sounds a pretty average weight for a healthy pregnancy, and baby will still likely be under 9lbs at birth.

My dear old mum likes to remind me every year about how hard and awful my birth was, and I only weighed 4lbs 11!

grey12 · 15/04/2022 05:31

They estimated my second to be big and she was a tiny sugar packet heavier than her sister Grin still at the 50th percentile

Pompom2367 · 15/04/2022 06:03

They told me dd would be huge op I was terrified as I'm not big myself we bought no newborn clothes due to this and she was tiny when she got here I had to send family out to buy newborn clothes that she wore for around 6 -8 weeks as we had none

boymummys · 15/04/2022 07:45

Mine was 6.15 at 36 weeks.

I'm four days over due so scared to see what he comes out like 🤣🤣

stimpyyouidiot · 15/04/2022 07:50

They told me my baby would be 9lb+ and she was 8lb 3

I don't even know why they estimate anymore as they are just so wrong the majority of the time!!
