Scan on Easter Sunday?

I thought this was a bit odd... maybe it's just me?

I called my EPU on Monday to book an early scan due to my history of ectopic pregnancy and they said the earliest scan they had was Sunday 17th. I went ahead and booked.

It only dawned on me a few hours later that it's Easter Sunday that day, just wondering if that's a common practice? I would've assumed they wouldn't be doing any 'routine' type of appointments and be open primarily for emergencies only as I'm aware the EPU is open 24/7. Or maybe the nature of this is still classed as urgent?
I'm not sure. Just wondering if anyone else had been offered scans on bank holidays etc.

I think you need to call them and check, we aren't going to know

LolaLoo2 · 13/04/2022 08:34

@Carebear99 she definitely said Sunday so I'm confident in the appointment. Just thought it was odd being a bank holiday and wondered if this was routine or common practice.

Logically, a service like that is needed 365 days a year equally so not having it on certain days just creates a backlog. Especially with Easter when Friday/Monday are bank Holidays.

FelicityPike · 13/04/2022 08:35

Sunday isn’t a bank holiday.

LolaLoo2 · 13/04/2022 08:37

@FelicityPike that's true but considering even supermarkets fully close I wouldn't have thought much else would be going on.

My local hospital does routine scans and appointments on weekends, bank holidays etc. For example, I know people who don’t need an ‘emergency’ scan but did need it to be exactly 10 days after the last scan, so if that’s a Sunday or whatever then it was on the Sunday. Equally, when I had my anti-D they wanted to do it a certain number of days after another medical procedure, so despite it not being an emergency scenario, I had it on a Saturday.

yorkshireteaspoonie · 13/04/2022 08:41

EPU is there for the 'out of ordinary' like early bleeds/ eptopics etc. bit like an A&E for pregnancy, I had a couple of weekend scans when I experienced bleeding early on and it was 'out of hours' (not mon- fri/ 9-5)

LolaLoo2 · 13/04/2022 08:44

@ShadowPuppets @yorkshireteaspoonie
That makes much more logical sense tbf! Thank you

When I was pregnant last year alot more scans were done at weekends and later into the evening to kind of spread them out. So waiting rooms are less full.

I have my 12 week scan on Easter Monday so they must do scheduled scans on bank holidays too, never thought the NHS would observe bank holidays, many private companies don't either

Justkeeppedaling · 13/04/2022 09:18

DH has a scan on Easter Saturday.
The NHS has a lot of catching up to do. I'm pleased they've finally become a seven day a week service.

They don’t close in Scotland.

All my EPU scans were on a Sunday, and the majority of my pregnancy scans were on a Saturday. This was pre-covid so I don’t think it’s to do with catching up. It’s just the way the service works. Pubs don’t close on Easter Sunday either 😂

Rhubarbina · 13/04/2022 17:56

I’ve had a routine, ENT, CT scan on Easter Sunday a few years ago- nothing particularly urgent though I also had the same thought at the time- think they just have to pack them in where they can
