Have I got enough cloth nappies to start?

I plan to use disposals for the first week(s) if I need to and I can buy again around the 3 month stage, but is the list below enough to keep me going until then?

  • 3 waterproof wraps
  • 7 boosters (different materials for night and day)
  • 14 flat squares (4 muslin & 10 terry)
  • 4 fitted/all-in-ones for convenience

I would get lots more muslin squares to use for the first few months. The terry squares swamped my baby for at least the first 4 months and only used muslins till then. Because you change them so often it doesn’t matter if you just get cheap basic ones. I’d use maybe 7 or 8 muslins in 24 hours. They wash and dry quick, but if you only want to wash every third day you’d need 24 muslins. My baby is 1 now and I still use the muslins as bibs, covers, emergency sheets, boosters in other nappies, etc etc etc Eventually they become cleaning cloths.

18 nappies might be enough but you might need a few more.

I've got 20 fitted nappies and about 9 or 10 wraps I think. I've only just got started with my newborn so can't tell if I'll need more but will see how I go.

With my son I didn't start until he was 18 months and we had about 24 nappies per size with him I think.

Also, you’ll need nappi nippers, liners ( I liked the fleece reusable ones) and maybe an extra wrap.

HDready · 12/04/2022 20:05

Why don’t you see how you go rather than buying more now? It doesn’t need to be all or nothing - it’s not the end of the world if you need to use disposables alongside your reusables whilst you’re getting to grips with things Smile

We run on 20 day nappies ( all in one type) and 4 night nappies ( with x2 wraps)

Have done since newborn.

20 all in one seems right. That allows for washing every other day, one always in change bag spare, days of extra poops or whatever.

I wouldn’t bother with lots of complicated muslin flats

TowerStork · 12/04/2022 21:33

Thanks for the good advice everyone. I will definitely get more muslins. The terries do look very big, but I thought they might be good for nighttime. I'd rather buy flats at this point in case something goes wrong and we don't end up using much cloth.

I think you need more wraps. Runny newborn poo can get on the elastic fairly easily so you need to change them more frequently than when they are bigger. I'd get a couple more if I were you.

SweetPeaGirl · 12/04/2022 23:26

I'm planning for cloth too with flats and covers, but haven't actually done it yet. The advice I've read is for 4-6 covers, and lots of muslins.

So maybe at least 1 more cover and an extra pack of muslins? These are good value and nice and thick: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008BSX3YS/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_i_GX3WMC3YXQSSHS05JFWY?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

When baby gets bigger you can double up muslins or fold to use as boosters (in any kind of cloth nappy), so they're never wasted.

Caspianberg · 13/04/2022 06:25

I’m not sure you really save a huge amount buying flats and covers. As they are as suitable older so you end up re buying.

Ps it’s reusable nappy week the last week of April. So if you wait another week, most companies will have huge discounts. I think we had 20% off tots bots plus additional 10% from website we bought off, which made it really reasonable.
I think we have spent about £350 total for 2 years use ( day all in one and night nappies, wraps, fleece, inserts). I could resell easily for about £200.

lljkk · 13/04/2022 06:34

I hope you get on well, OP. Try to go to cloth as soon as possible or you won't get into cloth at all (I've heard that story a lot).

do you plan to wash daily? Cloth is easier if you don't have to wash daily.

agree with others that another 2 wraps & another 6-10 muslins / thin terries would be good.

lljkk · 13/04/2022 06:36
is best, btw! feck me, wish we had Youtube when mine were little; MW showed us that originally. I mostly used shaped nappies once DC were mobile.
TowerStork · 13/04/2022 08:51

@lljkk thanks. I'll start a list of folds to practice with origami on top. I was thinking the same: unless I start as soon as possible (and teach DH a few folds) we might never get going.

I agree with 20 nappies. 3 pants is enough as they dry quick. Think you need more than 7 liners. I used washable ones and had as many as nappies. I washed every other day. Need to allow drying time (mine went on line.)

Caspianberg · 13/04/2022 09:34

We have 4 night nappies and 2 wraps. The wraps are washed after every use as I think they would smell otherwise. But they come out the machine virtually dry so fine washing both together every other day

deliwoman1 · 13/04/2022 12:31

I got so confused and panicked by this thread until I realised we've been lazy and gone for all-in-ones! I got a cheap deal on some 2nd hand Close pop-ins off eBay, so we're starting there.

We've got 9 newborn nappies with inserts, and 11 birth to potty ones with inserts. Plus a bunch of boosters and liners.

I figured we'd need a few more BTP but does anyone know if the 9 newborn nappies will be enough? I would prefer not to put the washing machine on every day. Every two days would be ideal - does anyone know how many on ave i would need to cover us for that long?

Sorry to hijack the thread!

Caspianberg · 13/04/2022 12:51

@deliwoman1 - at least 20. But we bought 10 newborn tots bots, and some
Size 1 night nappies and tbh just used some normal nappies in between the first few weeks. If others drying. But he outgrew the newborn so quickly, he could have just gone straight into birth-potty type all in one from day one.
So I would advice buying more of those birth- potty type. ( they fit from 9lb anyway) And if baby too tiny use a few eco disposable with the newborn washable the first few weeks

Caspianberg · 13/04/2022 12:53

@deliwoman1 - ps the all in one are great, but not for nighttime as they won’t usually last 10-12 hrs. So you need a few night and wraps for that ie tots bamboozle and wrap.

deliwoman1 · 13/04/2022 13:16

Thanks, @Caspianberg! That's really helpful. I planned to get some emergency eco-disposables - I'll prob stick a couple of those in the changing bag at first tbh.

Will also look at the night ones.
