Thoughts on anti sickness meds?

Hi Everyone

I’m 12+5 today and my symptoms kicked in at around 6 weeks. Since then I’ve suffered morning sickness every day, usually just in the morning. I’ve tried a few things to prevent the sickness, such as eating a rich tea biscuit before I get up etc. but nothing has worked.

I thought close to the 2nd trimester it would ease up, but over the last week it’s become a lot worse, I’m now sick several times a day, usually after food or drink and it’s obviously hurting my stomach now and causing me to feel shattered and stay in bed.

I’ve been trying to ride it out but decided today to contact the doctor so I’m just waiting on their call. I’m assuming they’ll prescribe anti sickness meds?

Has anyone else taken them and found them to work? Or did others find their sickness subsided early in the second trimester?

I took them after being admitted to the hospital at 9 weeks due to dehydration/ketosis.
I found them really helpful and have had no issues (there were some mild side effects like sleepiness with meclizine/pyridoxine and constipation with ondansetron but they were pretty manageable and much better than the constant nausea and vomiting- I live abroad so the antiemetics that you’re offered might be slightly different).
I needed to keep taking them regularly until I was 22 weeks (sadly the nausea and vomiting didn’t really start to improve until then). I’m now 34 weeks and still need them a few times a week.
Lots of people do improve naturally in the second and third trimester but it doesn’t happen for everyone.

Take them. I had sickness in both pregnancies, wasn't too bad with DS so only took them with DD. I did find they made me sleepy so used to take them at night. I'm sure I'd stopped taking them by around 18 weeks and the nausea had stopped on its own by around 16 weeks with DS.

I've been regularly taking them since 6 weeks and they've literally changed my life. Perfectly safe and mine are the type that dissolve under the top lip so no need to try and chew or swallowwhich would be enough to start me off! I'm almost 12 weeks now and find I only need 2 a day rather than 3 so my symptoms are lessening gradually.

Sickness with all 3 pregnancies from week 5/6 right through to labour.
I've had them all. Some work for a week or so and tail off, some work in combination with others. Sickness causes can change through pregnancy- mine starts as hormonal and then changes to being related to acid reflux, so different meds needed to treat these differing causes.

If your sickness is debilitating make sure you are taken seriously and don't be afraid to speak up if something isn't working.

Hop over to the current version of the pregnancy sickness support thread (I'll find it in a second), the posters on there are amazing

I took them both pregnancies and it literally changed my life
I was bed bound before, unable to eat or drink
The tablets enabled me to function normally, especially crucial in my second pregnancy when I had ds to look after and dh worked abroad
I stopped them about 28 weeks and went on to have normal deliveries
No effects on babies, they are perfectly healthy adults now

Good luck op, hope you start to feel better soon

taken them. As a midwife who prescribed said to me- "just because you're pregnant, doesn't mean you should suffer when there is help available"

fairgame84 · 12/04/2022 11:02

I've been taking them since 9 weeks. I tried to ride it out but lost 2kg in 2 weeks, got dehydrated and dropped my blood sugar. Honesty they've changed my life. My symptoms eased off a bit at 11 weeks so I stopped taking them but then symptoms started again over the past week so I'm back on them. Im 13+4 and still not up to my booking in weight. I can barely eat or drink anything without the meds.

I had no issues getting them from the gp, as soon as I mentioned my weight loss to the receptionist I got an emergency phone appointment. GP prescribed with no issues.

Take them, it might take a bit of trial and error to find the right one for you but take them.

I spent the first 16 weeks of pregnancy in and out of hospital due to HG in 3 weeks intent from being 15st to 12st. I weighed less at the end of my pregnancy than I had in 15 years before it.

They didn't stop me feeling sick but they stopped me being sick.

catsandquails · 12/04/2022 21:32

I had HG during both pregnancies so took a range of anti-emetics at various points. It sounds dramatic but I genuinely wouldn't have survived the first pregnancy without them.

Take them. I hope you feel better soon.

Please seek the help and get the medications that you need. I had HG with my first pregnancy, it lasted until about week 18, my sister had HG with both, and the first HG lasted the whole pregnancy. I was on ondansetron which was a god send. It does cause constipation and has a slight cleft palate risk, but that is incredibly low compared to the risks that ketosis can cause on a developing foetus. That is also helped by the fact that you are further through than most when you will start taking it. Getting the energy back to function is huge. When my sister had HG the whole pregnancy, she wasn't properly medicated (the pills stopped her from actually throwing up but not feeling sick), she was downright depressed by the time her DD arrived. With her second one, she got ondansetron and again, felt so much better. Please get seen to, and I hope that you feel better soon!

Whatever you decide to do OP, your baby is now fully developed so you don't have to worry about any medicine you take causing a structural malformation Thanks
